Had to read that twice...

Did you check if your Power Steering Fluid is topped off?

Going to be blunt, the light has been on but you state it's a safety issue. Why haven't you brought it to a dealer/shop to have it looked at if so worried? The light comes on, generally it should store a code.
It could be as simple as fluid top up and as complicated as a power steering assembly unit. If you don't drive the car much and the car has been sitting for a while, a battery issue comes to mind. Especially with the weather we've had over the last little while. They are electrically assisted steering pumps. Not sure of the new ones if they have gone full electric yet. When battery issues arise they tend to shut down the least vital components. Without actually scanning the car I suggest checking the fluid level like mentioned, and have a battery test performed.

yea what mcg said, sounds like it could be dangerous to drive. why dont you take it to the dealer? get it looked at. no one can diag it for you online without seeing it or over the phone. should be checked out.

yes it is

As what McGuyver_3 mentioned... take it to the dealer if you feel like its unsafe to drive. It costs money but hey.. your Safety is more important right?
