Just a FYI post;
Okay I've heard many people talk about the 2.3 becoming an oil pig, being a terrible engine etc. Well recently I started experiencing a loss of oil at a rate of about 2+ litres between 8k oil changes, where before that, I had zero noticeable loss.
I am presently at 332,000 Kms on my 2.3 NA engine.
After much thought and discussing the issue with several mechanics which I work with, I concluded it could be simply the PCV valve.
So I changed out the PCV and It was not an easy task, as the intake manifold needs to be removed plus other things to get to it. It was well worth it though, as since the change I've put 3000k on her and no noticeable oil loss whatsoever, checking at 500km intervals. The engine runs smooth as always.
So point of the post is; Don't condemn your engine to quick for loosing even a substantial amount of oil right off the bat, as it could be a relatively easy and cheap fix.

My 2.3L with 406,000km starts burning oil after 5000+km of an oil change. I usually have to put in 800ml to 1L to top it back up to close to the MAX level on the dip stick.
Already had my PCV replaced last year.
Hope this works out for you and you keep running it to 500,000km!

Thanks for the info. 260 on my 2.3 and currently doesn't burn a drop. Hopefully get a good few more years out of the car. I've heard the PCV valve is a pain

Well I know I'm not out of the water yet, that's why I'll be keeping a keen eye on it till my next oil change. But the fact I haven't lost any yet is a positive sign. I'll post on here again when I reach the 8k point.
I doubt I'll have this car till 500,000k with the way I'm putting kms on her recently, as I don't do much long distance highway anymore and the fact I'm planning on getting something new in 3 years or so. I'll be lucky to get to where you are now in mileage, lol.

It is a bit of a pain, especially one of the lower bolts on the manifold is a biatch, but like I said its worth the effort if it solves the issue and adds a few years of life to the car.

just curious, what oils do you guys use? 0W30 synthetic has worked well to combat burning and good for long oil change intervals

Been using 0w30 since warranty was up. My oil loss just started occurring maybe 6 months ago, with well over 300k kms on her.

Mobil1 5W-20 with Mazda OEM filters [Spin On Converted] for the majority with Started using Extended Performance (Gold Cap) two years ago when it became available in Canada.
Oil loss is noticeable after 5000km on an oil change interval.

Do you check the dip stick or when you drive you notice something is wrong? I plan to drive mine to the ground

No noticeable oil consumption on my 2012 2.0L with 291,000 km and have been on 0w20 and oem filter ...just started using the K&N Performance Gold which flow better and clean better ....
Just read that oil consumption happens due to valve stem seal failing and piston rod bearing starting to wear and fail ...not sure if its the same for 2.5 and 2.3L

Thanks for starting to make me think preventative.
Next chance.. I will replace the PCV and now started thinking about high mileage rejuving the engine.
Started with Rilsone high mileage engine repair to hopefully help restore the O & valve seals.

For those high mileage NA and especially 2.3 speed.
If you are burning oil .. oil loss through gasket and valve seals try this https://products.liqui-moly.com/motor-oil-saver-7.html
Before motor oil save you should consider https://products.liqui-moly.com/cera-tec-1.html
