P0442 2012 Mazda 3 2.5

Hey all,

My wifes Mazda 3 has an engine light and when scanned P0442 shows up. If read a few possible causes such as gas cap and a pressure relief valve near the gas tank? What should I look at first when diagnosing?

From a quick Google search;

Most common repair;

1.Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
2.Otherwise, replace the gas cap (we recommend an OEM original part, not aftermarket part), or.
3.Visually inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses.

i had this same issue

engine light came on and this code came up

what i did.

ignored it for a while.
cleaned the engine bay (disconnected the battery) and the check light disappeared and was replaced with "gas cap loose" light (the one that looks like a car with a bolt)

cleaned the gas cap by removing whatever grease was on the gas caps red oring and rubbed a little rubber protectant on it (the same kind used on window trim).
cleaned the filler neck with some rubbing alcohol

screwed the gas cap back on and after a drive on the DVP it disappeared.

im not sure how long this will hold up but its working for now
