Don't get too excited about the return of the MS3 just yet. The document also reveals the Mazda 3 turbo will only be available with a six-speed automatic transmission. This is somewhat in line with what we heard last year from Mazda 3 project manager Kota Beppu, who said a turbocharged 3 should be fast, but also "responsible and friendly…more friendly than a Golf GTI." Another hint that this won't be a tire-scorching hot hatch is Mazda's recent push toward luxury. The turbocharged variant of the Mazda 6 midsize sedan boasts a 250-hp four-cylinder engine. However, Mazda limits the 6's hotter powertrain to higher-end trims, where it serves as a complement to those models' greater refinement and upscale accoutrements, as opposed to a selling point in itself.

Will wait and see. If it comes to fruition, more power can be made with a tune adjustment.

I just don't see the point if it's not going to be offered in a manual. AWD Turbo is for enthusiasts who want full control and this just makes the WRX STI a more attractive option for potential buyers. Mazda seems confused right now as to what kind of demographic it wants to cater to and it's hurting them badly.

except the wrx or sti has been using the almost same power train for what 10 years. its dated, even the inside of the new ones could be much nicer. and lets not talk about reliability.. or lack there of. i think the mazda awd just opens the doors to tunes, mods and more power.
but that said i think a manual option is the way to go, sadly manual cars are dying, even Hyundai is starting to offer an automatic version of the Veloster N. im sure its a matter of time before manual is a thing of the past, even the new vettes are auto :(
