Manual Transmission Mount Just Snapped
Act of God ?
probably not, but it's parked and I'm not driving it !! Been arranging for parts and repair labor so I can get it fixed asap.
Anyone want to chime in on my bad luck ? Things I should watch out for ? Cause of the failure ? Future concerns or repairs ( bent bolts in other areas, engine mounts, transmission, clutch ) ?
Please help, thanks
Re: Manual Transmission Mount Just Snapped
Just curious year/mileage on the car?
Re: Manual Transmission Mount Just Snapped
Did you drive it aggressively? Our cars are notorious for bad mounts though.
Re: Manual Transmission Mount Just Snapped
Where did it break? On the top plate or the 'foot'? The top plate has a rubber bushing with a bolt that goes through to the transmission housing. It is possible that the bolt broke, or the bushing tore. Make sure you buy a new bolt when you install the new mount. Also, you might want to consider upgrading to a quality rear mm to reduce stress on the other mounts. You might want to consider an aftermarket tranny mount; but be aware that they are fairly harsh in terms of nvh.
Re: Manual Transmission Mount Just Snapped
The tranny mount broke...really? Out of all of our mounts I thought the tranny one was pretty hardy stock but I guess not? If you're looking for something cheap, I have my OEM Tranny Mount that's in fine working condition that I could sell you and even help you install if you wanted to learn how to do it yourself. Doing a RMM upgrade might be worthwhile as well but it'll likely take a while to get the part(s) in. The RMM is the easiest of the mounts to change although you have to do it from underneath the car so it can be a bit of a hassle.
As 'Donutz' said, there will be increased NVH when upgrading to aftermarket mounts. Both him and I have all of our mounts done so if you want, I'm sure you can check out either of our vehicles to get an idea of it.
Re: Manual Transmission Mount Just Snapped
The car is just nearing 105,000km and is 5 years old, so 2005...
As for the location of the break and cause, well the mechanics today seemed to believe it was due to improper installation after a recent clutch replacement, bolts being too loose or improperly torqued.
Take a look for yourself

I had the new part installed by 3:30 pm and was back on the road 205$ poorer, but glad I was able to land some fair deals.
Re: Manual Transmission Mount Just Snapped
Wow, that is definitely broken! That's the 'foot' I was referring to.
Re: Manual Transmission Mount Just Snapped
That's not even technically the transmission mount, but it's crazy that you managed to snap that and $205 for the part and installation isn't the end of the world although it's quite an easy fix to do even in a driveway.
I'm glad I do just about everything myself nowadays. Money saved + experience gained + new things learned = awesome.
Re: Manual Transmission Mount Just Snapped
Holy crap. Thats nuts. Guess its pretty easy to visually find out when a mount snaps lol.
