Engine Blown...what to do
Hey All...was a member in the past, however just signed up again since I've had a serious issue with my 3. Was driving along when out of nowhere, there was a serious clacking sound. While pulling off the highway from express to collector, pretty much coasting, the engine seized. Apparently I blew a hole in the block and all the oil came spewing out...by the time the car came to a halt, the engine had seized.
Now...it's a fully loaded 2005 GS (leather, moonroof, etc) with approx. 145k km...which after looking further into, a modest $6k would be a realistic "sale" price.
Do I replace with a used engine? Looks like $1500-$2000 for used engine plus 15 hours at $85 to change...means $3k - $3.5k. Furthermore, it looks like with whatever happened, the starter may have gone.
Beyond that, both front and rear brake pads / rotors need to be changed ($500 easy...even with doing myself) and I've got a couple body items that need to be fixed if I'm going to sell (pay some guy cash to create a plastic weld for a crack in the bumper)...lets say another $600 total. Also looks like $4.5kfor a rebuilt (incl. install) which isn't an option.
Therefore...quite possibly $3500 engine + $250 starter + $500 brakes + $500 other = $4750
I have new rubber on the oem rims, plus a set of winter black rims with bald winters.
What should I do? Was thinking of putting black rims / old tires on and sell as-is, then try and get $500+- for new rubber / oem rims. How much could I get for a fully loaded car without an engine and the listed ailments?
Thanks in advance for your input!

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
DId you buy it new? or used?
Shoot me the VIN, I can tell you if it had Extended Warranty.. the motor could be covered..
-
Re: Engine Blown...what to do
I bought it new and don't believe it was under the extended warranty, but I'm bad with that kind of thing. The VIN number is JM1BK143651266038.
Thanks Jeff for looking into it for me. Much appreciated...now remember why I used to hang out on this site so much as everyone is so helpful.

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
No such luck...
You may want to see what Jimmie could do for you... but it sounds like you are putting money into a horse on it's way to the glue factory.

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
Hey Jeff...still weighing my options as well as discussing with my wife. Why don't you provide me your best deal on a 2010 (not loaded...but adequately equipped...either hatchback or sedan) and a 2011 and I'll consider over the next week (on vacation as of Friday for a week).
2010...new? seriously?

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
Hey Boom,
I hope you find the best solution for you.
I just bought a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 with Jeff about 1 month ago. A+.
Good luck!

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
I'm guessing spun bearing in cylinder 3 or 4. Best thing to do was suggested above, call Jimmy and see what he can do for you.

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
why do so many 2.3L engines just blow up like this? i love my 04 mazda 3 sport, but these engines seem to go way more often than they should.

I think the question is why are there so many spun bearings in cylinder 3 (or 4). My theory is because of the balance shaft assembly.

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
thanks all for the continuing comments...will definitely talk to Jimmy over the next week or two. Leaving for a week vacation tomorrow night an no time to really deal with it before then.

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
Best of luck and let us know which ever route you decide to take.

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
i blew my motor, pricing went as this,
1700 for motor from carcones delivered to jimmys door,
jimmy swapped motors and did a tranny flush for $650
coming out to about 2400.
now for the other stuff is your choice.

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
how many km's were on that motor schmat66 (the one you got for 1700)? the prices I'm getting from Carcone's are a little high. They're giving a price of $2500 for one around 70k km but there is another one with 160k for $1850. I don't want the one with 160k...just too much...and the other one is too expensive to be feasible (imo).

you can also check car-part.com for other suppliers that may have Engines that meet your requirements.

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
I remember calling them http://www.standardautowreckers.com/ and http://www.jdmengineland.com/ when I originally thought I couldn't get an engine swap from Mazda cuz I didn't have the oil change history as I bought it used. The pricing from what I remember was around $1700 but jdmengineland has an engine displayed there for $1200 so just give them a call.
