Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
For all those who currently drive 5speed, 6speed, even three-on-the-tree for that matter; what do you all think of this article:
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/200...e-stick-shift/
It's so full of ignorance it has to either be a spoof, or some kid unable to learn stick in which he gets frustrated and immaturely believes that stick shift is inadequate....

Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
I was going to say, I don't think this person knows how to drive a stick. My Mazda may not be a stick right now, but my second car is a standard. The only thing I could be charged with is taking off to slowly for the other drivers behind me, because sometimes I don't want to shift like I'm racing.
Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
Dude... This article was written 8 years ago. The only real threat to the traditional manual is the progress of dual clutch and robotised transmissions. Torque converter autos are designed and optimised for fat lazy americans sitting in traffic for 2 hours a day.

Lmao

Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
Haha try a 13 speed or a 3 over 3
Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
I stopped reading the article after the rediculous comments; "it's a fundamentally unsafe way to control a car" and "operating a manual is an inherently difficult and dangerous procedure" ....What a MORON! A standard equipped vehicle in many instances is a safer method of operation and control of the vehicle and unless you have two left feet or only one foot or no feet, most can get quite proficient in using it.

Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
While he is a moron, and I do love driving stick and won't be changing that any time soon, todays autos are far more efficient and faster than any manual. But I am not racing trying to shave .00001 off my lap time, so I'll stick with my 6speed.
Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
lol... "listening to engine revs distracts the driver" and watching the gauges takes your eyes off the road lol..
i think there are enough other distractions in todays "automatic" cars that are more distracting that watching your damn gauges.
i drive an auto, but that was a mistake i made when buying my car in 2008.. never again!
article is written by an idiot

I drive an auto-manual now, and used to have a 5-speed MX-6. I hardly think that manual transmissions are inadequate, I'd say they actually give the (experienced) driver more control over the car. That being said, automatics are generally more convenient. Efficient? Hardly. If you know your car, and know how to drive manual properly, you can easily keep up with/pass/do a 180 around autos BECAUSE they're more geared towards convenience and fuel economy (generally). If were talking about DCTs, thats a whole other ball game. Obviously, a DCT will shift faster than a person driving stick, experienced or not. That being said, an auto in manual mode will likely shift faster than an inexperienced driver would in a manual car.
Bottom line, if you know what you're doing, manual is better overall, it's just less convenient in traffic, and possibly less efficient (performance)/worse on gas if you don't know what you're doing.
Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
I've actually found that manual drivers tend to plan their deceleration better and look further down the road due to the requirement to plan shifts. Same with motorcycle riders, they tend to pay more attention to blind spots. Being coddled and removed from the act of driving is creating worse drivers, not safer ones. The need for self driving vehicles is becoming a sel fulfilling prophecy due to the proliferation of technology designed to take your attention away from the road.
Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
He's just a troll. All of his comments in regards to manual are just plain ignorant and baseless. Using a clutch and looking at a tach are distracting?? Oh so is using the brake pedal and looking at your speedometer then. DIPSHIT
Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
I'm glad that MS3 and certain sports car only offer Manual. Those dooms who is not willing to learn can stick with other stuff. period.

lol I drive a MS6 and unless im at the track on dont even bother looking at the tach... i can tell when the car is 5k to 6k rpm... I guess not everyone is like that but once you've had a car long enough you just get to know how she is...

Yup, you can feel/hear/sense how and when to shift...I rarely ever need to look down to know when to shift.
Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
"Driver distraction is one of the major causes of vehicle accidents." I focus more on driving with a manual lol, whereas with the auto, a driver is free to do other things with their free hand.
Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
I wonder what the stats would say regarding distracted driving incidents in standard vs auto vehicles..
Re: Manual Transmission Drivers - UNITE
paying attention while driving is for pussies.

I agree with this. Manual driving makes you a better driver because you know if you do things wrong it's going to be a nuissance to correct or you will waste more gas or wear the engine more.
