Why no tune for Corksport SRI?

I'm looking into getting an SRI for my 2010 MS3, and I'm stuck between Corksport and Cobb. I've read threads on the differences between the parts themselves, but I just don't understand why Cobb says a tune is required when installing their SRI, but corksport says on their website that, through testing, no tune should be required for their intake. What's true here? Anyone have data that can support either company? I know there's no downside to buying an Accessport, but I'm debating if I want to shell out $600 on one right now.

You don't need a tune for either. Of course a tune will be better, but you don't need it. Cobb is trying to push more of their products. That said, which ever intake you get, get the TIP at the same time.

Cobb wants to sell you the AP, so naturally they will tell you that a tune is required for their SRI. CS is competing with Cobb on intakes, so they'll tell you that no tune is required. It probably doesn't matter which one you pick, unless you also want to upgrade the TIH at the same time.

Also, Booostin is selling his AP. You should jump on that like, right now.

As for the HPFP, this is a very important part which you need to upgrade. It has been shown that some gen2 MS3s will experience drastic drops in fuel pressure at WOT even with just stage 1 and a tune. If your fuel pressure is insufficient, atomization of the fuel is not properly achieved, which could lead to zoom zoom boom.

Spending money to buy and install a fuel pump upgrade (CPE fuel pump or Autotech) > paying for a new engine after zoom zoom boom

As long as the map is there for the Sri thats all that matters , and +1 for boostins AP thats a amazing Price, and i recommend getting the fuel pump and the AP first before other mods just my opinion

Just reiterating what others have said, you're basically taking a gamble if you go with an SRI without AP or fuel pump upgrade. You may be ok, you may not. But with that being said, the majority of people have no issues with fuel pressure dropping with just an intake.

In my opinion, you might as well get an AP because 1) you'll know if you need a fuel pump upgrade by logging 2) your car will run a lot cleaner (less rich) and you'll get a nice boost in power with just a Stage1 tune

I'm probably going to go AP first then. Better safe than sorry - Love the car.

1. The intake tunes are all more or less the same from what I could tell when I compared them. The only difference is going to be the MAF calibration between them. Regardless of the intake map you choose, the first thing you are going to start with is a MAF calibration to make sure that everything looks good before you beat on it. Once you've got your MAF calibrated you can transfer it from map to map.

2. Get an AP, you won't regret it. Best $600 you will ever spend on the car.

3. Like the other guys have already stated, plan on a fuel pump upgrade in the near future.

So I contacted Corksport directly and this is response they gave me as to why no tune is required:

"There are a wide range of opinions out there on the internet. *Cobb says you need a tune to run an intake (theirs specifically) since the fuel trims are moved to far away from the stock operating range when it is fitted to a 2010+ model Mazdaspeed 3 which causes a check

On our intake we have the correct sized MAF housing which keeps the fuel trims within the intended operating range of the stock ECU so there is no check engine lights.

We tested our intake for months on our shop Mazdaspeed 3 before releasing it to the market. *Our goal was to keep the fuel trims with the intake within the stock range which would keep the engine performing without running lean. *One of the items we use in our MAF design was the air straightener which mirrors what the stock airbox used to keep the fuel trims within the target range Mazda intended.

With the SRi we offer installed properly you should not have any problems with the fuel trims. *

So to answer your question if you install just the intake you should be just fine."

Can anybody directly refute this claim? With logs from running on stock tune with only an SRI mod (everything else bone-stock).

If it helps... I just installed the Corksport SRI this past weekend, along with Forge BPV (v2). I have stock fuel system

I had/have zero check engine lights, or any codes pop up.

First start it kicked the throttle up quite a bit and you could hear it making a good racket, but once the computer calculated everything after about 20 seconds it calmed back down to idle as per normal.

So basically other than the install being a pain in the arse.... I have had zero issues

Do you have an AP or other method to monitor your fuel pressure ? It's not so much that I think a tune would be required, but I think a HPFP would be very wise even with just an intake.

I have Ultra Gauge installed, which monitors Fuel PSI
