Bucking and Burning Smell
So today on the way to AA (nice to meet you all again!), I was stopped on a hill. I started and the car bucked and threw a code. Here are the problems as listed...
1. Car bucks in lower gears (violently) and even in higher gears, not as much though, only when the accelerator is touched
2. Smells like burning clutch under the hood
3. Longer the car is running the more violent/often the bucking happens.
4. If the car is cruising... aka no change in velocity then there is no bucking
5. The clutch works perfectly, no grinding or slipping
6. The car downshifts perfectly fine
7. Brand new motor mounts all around in the car
8. Just got an oil change
9. Engine light that INITIALLY came on is no longer on yet problem remains
PLEASE HELP! Any questions I will answer, any pictures I will take. It's going to a mechanic as soon as possible but if it's something simple I'd like to try and fix it myself.
Thanks guys!
Nice meeting you all again, if I did infact meet you. :P

Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
try to read the code, it should still be saved. at least youll have some sort of lead. i think it might be the pressure plate :/ then again i drive an autotragic

Good advice. Check the CEL and go from there.
Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
Coil pack. That's my guess. But yeah try and read the code for sure, might help send you in the right direction.
Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
Taking it to the shop today to get the code read as my code reader is in Belleville. So we shall see.....
Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
From your description of the symptoms, it points directly too and possibly a defective clutch, but as it only seems to occur 'under load', it is most likely the pressure plate or a throw-out bearing issue....I'd guess at the throw-0ut being the culprit. But get the code read.

Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
So I'm at my mechanic and on the drive over I noticed the bucking occurs at the higher ends of the gear changes so higher rms. Yet it doesn't occur at least not yet in 5th gear. It's bad today and the engine light is back. Hopefully it's nothing to expensive fingers crossed.

And le code is?
Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
Maf sensor I guess one of the wires got pulled out... It's super corroded tho so I'm heading to a scrap yard to see if I can't rummage one up. Pretty happy it wasn't the transmission
Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
you sure the bucking isnt causing the maf to be tugged? and the transmission has its own light, so THAT should be lighten up instead of the engine light. so the tugging might be another problem all together. but take it slow, one step at a time. and wish for the best!
Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
Anybody know where I could get a MAF pigtail.. apparently they are hard to come by. Although they are the same for the 6, 3 and protege5.

A clutch problem isn't going to throw a CEL. It's purely a mechanical device...
Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
The bucking and the cell could be two different issues altogether or related in some way. The symptoms point to the clutch, but with a code, if related, could be a completely different issue. We won't know for sure until ds08tf fixes his MAF.

Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
The mechanic said that a hard shift.. like the one on the hill would have pulled the wires tight due to the short length of the harness. He said lots of mazdas have the problem and it causes the bucking. He said the burning smell might have been some spilt oil from the recent oil change or something else entirely. We shall see when it gets fixed... I'm taking a look at some scrapyards tomorrow finger crossed for under 100 dollar price.

Jamie? Make sure if you're getting him to do it, offer a cash price. He'll cut you a deal for sure.
Re: Bucking and Burning Smell
MAF Sensor, or stretched wires on it. Had this issue last summer.
Edit : woops, op figured it out. Would asking MOT help you out? Plus it is brand new.
