Metal spring at TOP of rear brake pad - necessary?

Hi folks. 2007 Mazda 3 here.

Are the twisted metal springs found on the TOP (not back) of some rear brake pads necessary? I just bought a set of brake pads and realized only at the end that the seller provided 3 brake pads with no springs, and one brake pad with a spring.

Am I going to be okay if one side of the car doesn't have the pad with the twisted metal spring? The pads with the springs were supposed to be used on the inner side, with the pads without springs being used on the outside.
