Rear Main Seal leak /drip
Hey Guys
I have been battling to figure this out for a while now.
Replaced twice - the seal has dripped several times and then gone ...no dripping
Lose about 1/4 litre over a whole day of track lapping
Happens only under extreme engine loads / Track lapping events / Revving past 8K
Several Question- love your feedback and any experience knowledge shared:
How much PSI can the OEM main rear seal can handle before starting to let oil by?
Is this part upgradable to a higher performing better seal product ?
Can this be due to overfilling oil and creating extra pressure?
Will venting PCV to a catch can elevate the internal pressure?
Re: Rear Main Seal leak /drip
Ha !
Did some online research and some calls and here's what i found so far;
On modified MZR 2.0L (also in the NC MX5 platform)
Hmmm now i wonder if the Global Cup MX5 series had same issues in the NC.
The OEM rear main seal will drip /leak when under race /track heavy load and High constant RPM
Why .... (info from call with Esslinger Racing )
Main reason - High oil pressure cause by either or combo of the following:
PCV not vented to a breeder or a oil catch can.
Over fill engine oil and/or extra oil used with a oil cooler (when overfilled plus high revving
can cause oil to froth and increase oil pressure)
High revving blowby by engine if Torque plate not used in re-assembly
Not talked about - if thicker can contribute or aide in blowby by provided better ring seal
Solutions:
Venting PCV
Replace OEM with the Viton seal and new aluminum housing made by Esslinger (on back order)
Dont overfill
