just in case you didn\'t know.. do NOT average out the average fuel consumptions.. use the TOTAL # of liters used and total # of km travelled.. MOST likely the numbers will be SIMILAR but NOT the same.. a little hint from the resident geek :)

there are way too many fuel economy/bitching threads so i\'ll continue in this original one ;)
something to consider for those doing a lot of highway driving and those who don\'t like to have fun while driving ;) ..
Quote:
The four-cylinder Toyota Camry, for example, is pretty fuel-efficient. At 65 mph, our tests show it gets an impressive 35 mpg. Our autos engineers then tested to see what happens when you change how you drive the Camry. They used a fuel meter to track the amount of gasoline used. If you drive the ideal 55 mph, the mileage improves from 35 to 40 mpg. But if you speed up to 75 mph, the Camry\'s mileage drops below 30 mpg.
Put the air conditioner on and the engineers found you lose another mile per gallon or so. And if you put a luggage carrier on top of the Camry, you lose 6 miles per gallon at 65 mph. All together, if you use a pod and drive fast with the AC on, the Camry\'s highway mileage would plummet to a projected 22 mph--not much better than what you\'d routinely get with an SUV on the highway.
Regardless of what kind of car you drive, there are ways to stretch your fuel dollars. Keep a steady pace, use cruise control when possible, and drive 65 mph or less.

That\'s not good analysis in my mind. If you turn on the A/C, put on a pod and drive fast in an SUV, I\'m sure that mileage would plummet quite a lot too.

i think they were referring to doing all the \'bad stuff\' (from fuel efficiency point of view) to an otherwise fuel efficient vehicle and compare it to a plain jane SUV w/o a/c and all that stuff.. maybe i\'m wrong.. meh..

Well i drive an 06 and i\'m getting some pretty crappy numbers as well. I\'m reading and telling according to what the trip computer tells me. So far it\'s 12.5-13.5L/100km. I have the 2.3L and i just found out the trip computer is telling me i\'m using 15-16L/100km these 2 snow days. I\'m wondering why. It\'s pretty weird the slower i go the more gas i use. And one thing is i do\'nt warm my car for long that is. Max 3 mins then i\'m off on the road. I also don\'t dump it until the car is fully warm.

idling more than a few seconds (enough to check your blindspots and look left and right) is pretty much wasting fuel since distance travelled = 0km :p
3min is just another nail in your fuel economy and global warming..

lol.. BUT i do not complain about my mileage.. i KNOW i can get < 8L/100km on the highway.. i just CHOOSE to clean out the carbon deposits more often than most :D

I find the 2006 auto tranny have higher revs then the 2005s. When the car is warm when i\'m accelerating i slightly step on the pedal and it easily revs up to 3k rpm to change to 2nd gear. I tried the 2005 before and it doesn\'t do that. Is it maybe because of the extra 5gear i have that increases the revs and takes more gas in lower speeds? Please verify if i\'m wrong.

base on whatever advertisment, 5sp or 6sp AT have higher low gear for faster pickup and lower high gear to save gas than 4sp, so yes, if you constantly drive on low gear, you burn more gas.

So i guess maybe thats why. When i fill up my tank it only lasts me 4 days for about umm 300-350km. usually $40 a tank

There must be a lot more new 2006s on the road now. Can some people chime in and share their fuel economy numbers for their cars?
I drive the 06-2.3L HB and average around 12-15L/100 on 90% city. I get really crappy mileage when in stop and go traffic and if I drive short distance (e.g 5-10 mins of driving). Hwy driving is around 9-12L/100. Still in the breakin stage so I am keeping it as close to 3K RPM as possible. Somewhere in the manual, it state that the AC will be on (even if the light is not on) if the blow vent is set to defrost and etc - the dial from 12 o\'clock and onward clockwise. This will definitely affect the fuel economy.

This last tank of gas, I got the best milage on my 05 gt sport since I bought it. I got 360km when the light first came on. Filled up and it took apprx 45L to fill. I have 3000 km on it and I hope that this is a sign that I will be getting the same from now on! I did about 150km of hwy driving, the rest was city.

You\'re not serious are you? You\'re happy getting 19 Mpg. (12.5L / 100km)

Dam...360km! Last tank I got 526.4km and I have a 04 manual hatch with a CAI (now SRI) for the winter and I don\'t take it easy on the gas either. I am glad you think that is good but I would not be very happy with that gas mileage with a 4 cyl. engine.

Your ride is a gas guzzler!!!...but you do city driving mainly and I assume a lot of stop\'n\'go traffic or during rush hour.

most of my driving is stop and go, i live 2k from work....i am not excited about it, but it is the best i have got so far.
Should I be talking with the dealer about this milage?? I do not drive the car crazy as it is auto.

Should you talk to the dealer.
Heheheheh Sure....
First you\'ll get the engine break-in excuse......5000km. Then the engine break-in 10,000km
then after 10k of guzzling gas they\'ll say it\'s normal.
Welcome to your Mazda 3 purchase

Is there any car out there that gets the milage that they state?
I have yet to hear of one.
Just think for a second. If you had bought the car based on gas mileage only you would have most likely ended up with a hybrid of some sort and not a 3. You would be paying a large amount for the the fact it is a hybrid and then you find out the mileage is off by as much as 20-25% that would suck. I personally don\'t think the mileage thing is as big an issue as people make it. All cars are rated by the same testing so the number are realative.
I think the real complaint should be with the price of gas:)

lol.. zing.. :D
anyways, I have a 2005 auto hatchback gt
I\'ve been averaging about 10.3L/100km.. I\'d say I drive about 50% hwy and 50% city.. sometimes 70% hwy and sometimes 70% city but I always end up using approx the same amt (ie, sometimes 10.7 and sometimes 10.1).. I stop pumping gas at the first or second click at the pumps (well, I do now)..
I wouldn\'t say it was good and I wouldn\'t say it was bad.. I guess it\'s ok.. I was expecting maybe around 9.3L/100km..
