Re: Engine Blown...what to do
Use Lecavalier Auto Parts.
I've gotten numerous parts from them and not only are the parts exactly as described, they are easy to deal with even for warranty issues (I had a bought a tranny, but it had a leak that couldn't be fixed - they sent me a new one at no charge and let me keep the original one).
I got a 2.3L engine from an '08 with only 18k on it and with a 1 year warranty for ~$2k shipped to Jimmy's door. Not only that, but it was there within a day of ordering and I did not pay any extra for any sort of express shipping.
All said and done - engine, install/labour, fluids, etc. - it cost me ~$2500 going with Jimmy. There were a few bugs that he worked out free of charge and immediately after they happened as he knew I go to school out of town.
I do all my own work on my cars now, but for anyone that doesn't, I HIGHLY recommend Jimmy. Top-notch service and incredible prices. Can't be beat!
As for the spun bearings, I agree with Donutz. I believe that the balance shaft assembly is the underlying cause. That thing is MASSIVE and just sits right in the way of cylinders 3 and 4.
Re: Engine Blown...what to do
Still on vacation but just checked in. Does anyone know if a newer model engine will fit in the 2005? 2.3l auto. Seems newer engines at much less km are a lot cheaper than a 2005 2.3. Anything else fit? Focus engine?
Re: Engine Blown...what to do
2.3L mazda 3 engine from any year should work just fine.

Correct. I have a 2008 2.3L in my 2006, which means it'll be fine in an '05 as well.
For those who have 5-speeds, the 04-06 5speed tranny has a different part number than the 07-09 but both are interchangeable. The 07-09 5speeds had a small update internally hence the change in part number.
Hope that helps! :)

Re: Engine Blown...what to do
I got an engine starting price 1800$ from standard auto for my 2010 sedan 2.5L (long story). I ended up paying 2500$+ taxes but I got lifetime warranty on the motor and it had less mileage then my car. They claimed it had about 10k km on it
