I really don't know where the misconception comes from, but the outside diameter of the tire on 18's and 17's should be within a couple mm of identical. You can go smaller, but it's not an inherent consequence.

I used a tire size calculator to get an idea of overall diameters. I compared my current stock setup of 205/50/17, to 205/40/17 and 205/40/18.. I have no idea how close these would be to the actual dimensions I would go with as it would be based on whether I ended up with an 8.5 or 9.5" wheel, and how much stretch I want etc.. but heres the figures I got back from the calculator. No idea how accurate these are, or like I said, if these would even be sizes I would be using on new rims.. but it seems like it can make a considerable difference??
Current setup Overall Diameter: 25.07 in 636.77 mm
205/40/18 Overall Diameter: 24.45 in 621.03 mm
205/40/17 Overall Diameter: 23.45 in 595.63 mm
Agreed. With 18's you will not be running a 50 sidewall like on a set of 17's. You will be running 35 or 40. Otherwise you throw off the speedo/odo calibration. So with 18's, you can run a stretch without affecting the calib, which will allow you to go lower, and flusher. Whereas 17's with the same kind of stretch, you'll need to recalibrate.
But all that depends on how much stretch is on the tire, which depends on how wide the rims are. So did you do 8.5" or 9.5"?
I don't think the difference between what I have now and a low profile 17 or something would be enough for me to care about recalibrating. I went from tires with like a 28" diameter to tires with a 33" diameter on my truck and the difference was tiny. Like if the speedo said I was going 90, I was actually going 95.
And I don't know yet. Depends if I go 17 or 18", and also depends which brand. Probably an 8.75 or 9"
So I have to decide on a rim, a size, and a width. Then figure out how much stretch I want and go with a width that'll pull it off..
on that topic.. anyone ever seen www.tyrestretch.com?? it has a huge library of photos for various sizes. For example.. you can search for say.. a 195/40/17 on a 9" rim and if they have it in the library you can see pics of how the stretch will look. Pretty cool
nice thats a pretty great resource. They've got some ridiculous shit on there!

HOLY
Lol that's so gross
There's also your ODO, unless you don't care about accurate mileage, then no need to worry. But you said "but it seems like it can make a considerable difference??" So what was your concern there?
Have a look at GWN's thread, somewhere between page 8 and 16 he put on new rims with crazy stretch. Have a look at that, and the tire sizes. That will help you figure out where you don't wamt to be (I know you def won't want the amount of stretch he has), and then you can work backwards from there.
Soo much giggidy!
They're the OEM's mounted backwards - gonna rock it next year
How do you guys think fat tires would look on my current wheels? I'm really becoming a fan of the look... and was thinking about throwing some 235/40's on the front and some 255/40's on the back (or something like that... as square as possible). Do you think the look would work on my wheels, or should I look for something more like an RPF-1 or something (suggest similar)
You want chunky looking wheels? Why? They soo ugly.
(ie, like the amount of ture on my works?)
Why fat tires? Because race car.

I wanted to run 225/40s on my wheels at one point in time.
Sadly finding that for 17" rim = impossible.
At the end of the day it is your car do what you think looks good.
If you get RPF-1s though 9" width please.
:drool
Actually I was looking at nt03-m's. At least 9", prefer 9.5."

yes please
Offset and width play a huge part in NT03s the look quite bad in lower width offset. I looked for them briefly abut couldn't make it work.
17x8 + 35 (which is more aggressive than my front wheels)

17x9 +38

However these are also said to be x9 +39
