I did the second fill-up today on my brand new '11 Sport GS with the 2.5 litre engine. So far I am averaging 8.2 l/100 km. That's with50/50 highway vs. city driving. This is much better than I had been expecting.

I get 500-550kms to a tank with my boosted 2.3l on 91oct.
My handy dandy Gas Cubby app is telling me I was getting 9.1L/100km before I cleaned my throttle body.
6 tanks after cleaning and I am now getting 7.9L/100Km.
Only other engine mods I have done are K&N Panel filter and the Throttle Body ground.
Usually get about 550-615km/tank.
Not bad for an 06 with 200,000Km
4.1L/100km on the last tank. Mostly highway, a little bit of city. Weeeehooo.

Total Kms: 19482.1 Kms
Daily stop and go highway and combined city driving with some spirited episodes.
So glad I got the 2.0L w/ 5MT. :D Note: running synthetic engine oil and synthetic manual trans oil. K&N drop in air filter.

im happy i went with the 2.5, its a nice difference between the 2.0 and the fuel economy isnt that much worse at all. very close ahh
lol riight !!
+1
Coming from a tdi standpoint I personally don't know ANYONE pulling numbers like that. Nice try buddy lol
This is what you should be getting if that http://www.fuelly.com/driver/antsi/cooper-s
WOW!!!! how do you guys get these numbers???
2011 speed 3 I get maybe 500km to a tank with 94 octane and amsoil synthetic..... Mixed between hwy and city.. I have 5500km on the odo.. Had the car for just over a month. I have put 2000km on the car so far
this thread makes me lol. im getting about 10.2l/100km when im being nice. lolz! :D
Fuelly sounds like an interesting site. Gonna sign up!
I've got about 600kms on my 3 and I'm noticing that my gas is depleting faster than it should while driving nice. Does fuel economy really get much better after engine break-in?
:( thought my 3 was bad on gas until I sold it and got the is300.. this thing cost $90 to fill up and average 450 - 500, sigh.
As some of you know, I recently purchased a brand new Mazda 3 GS. I noticed that my fuel economy wasn't so great so I decided to track it with fuelly. 2 fuel-ups is hardly enough to gauge my mileage but I wonder why my Avg L/100km is so high at 10.2?
My odometer is at 926km. Been driving easy, too... no hard braking or lead footing. Never blast the air conditioner, either. About 60/40 city/highway. Windows closed when on the highway. Never did an oil change yet so the engine oil is whatever the dealer put in it at the beginning.
Would I perhaps get better fuel economy after engine break-in? Your opinions are appreciated :)

To be honest i didnt notice a large gain in fuel economy until after my first year or 24,000km of driving. but it also depeneds on how you drive it as well. if i shift 2500-3000rpm i could easily get over 600+ km to the tank. if i shift 5000 rpm + i will average around 500 ish
i average 18L/100kms in my truck....
Actually, it's not the hard braking you have to worry about. It's the soft braking. You should never step on the brakes unless you intend to stop. The accelerator pedal is for controlling speed. If you need to use your brakes when following somebody, you're following too close!
Of course, you should ease off the gas and coast, if you see the light is red ahead. No need to race up to it.
I forgot to mention that I'm on automatic transmission... but wow, 24,000km to see a large gain in fuel economy is quiet a wait lol
Good idea. Full synthetic, here I come :D
Certainly. I drive downtown most of the time so there's lots of stop-and-go traffic. I'll apply your advice and try harder to not soft brake much.
I have exactly the same setup as you with the 11' GS Sport Luxury. I've been getting 500-550km/tank, currently almost 7000km. I haven't changed the oil yet, but have my first service appointment at the dealership for winters/oil change Nov 1st. I've only used Fuelly once thus far as I just heard about it.
I figure it's my turn to chip in. I've recorded my car's consumption from day 1, using only the numbers I get from the Odo and refilling-to-full each time.
2011 MZ3 Sport (2.5 and 6 MT)
Consumption 9.07 L/100 km
Cost 9.70 $/100 km
Total Fuel Consumed 4759 L
Total Cost 5087 $
(Odo currently at 52500 or so. Car on the road since March 09.)
It's about 50/50 highway/city.
On the subject of breaking-in a new engine:
My fuel economy for the first few fill ups sucked. Low of 9.5L/100KM and high of 10.5. But I also purposely avoided highways and kept the revs up more than usual during the break-in. (No, not red line high, but under 4k for the first 2000 km)
Best trip:
Driving down to Maine, taking US 2 the whole way with speed hovering around 80km/h the whole time on the twisty hilly roads, I got 7.09L/100km on the tank. W00T!
Just entered my third Fuelly fuel up.
Slight improvement with 9.6L/100km (previously 10.2)
my gas light came on at 430km
fueled up 42.255 litres
not sure how are people getting 500-550 km per tank :(
hahaha I have a few theories :P
Im in the same boat as electrojay. I have 9300km on my 2011 GX and I get around 410-420 before light goes on.
I've started to record my mileage so I can show it to my dealer...but it's pretty bad. I do 70% highway and 30 city, don't rev more than 3000, coast as much as I can. According to my calculations,I get around 10.7l/100km( last2 fill ups). 2 weeks ago I went to Kingston and back ( from ottawa) and had 1/4 of tank left. That 1/4 tank was gone in 80km for a total of 480km with majority highway driving . It sucks!
