Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
He actually quoted me $200 (instock, basic color) + $80 for a clearcoat and that was without mentioning I was on TM3. I wonder if he'll drop lower once I say something :P
I'll be bringing my RX8 rims to him either tomorrow night or Saturday. Can't wait to see the results.
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
For the members that have gotten their rims powdercoated at Metal Coaters and have had them for a longer period of time now, how would you rate their durability so far? Also, I'm not sure if this is a fair question to ask, but how would you compare Quy's Powdercoating process to Metal Coaters?
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
in terms of durability mine are holding up great, no chips or any wear and tear on the paint. That being said i think the clear coat is completely worth the money.

LOL, I just PM'd you and didn't realize you already posted here. Thanks.
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
Has anyone had experience with Metal Coaters and getting them to powdercoat two different colours on a set of rims to get an effect? I have a very particular (yet essentially simple) idea I want to do on my RX-8 rims
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
oh wow I didn't expect this thread to go this long. Mine are holding up alright without clearcoat with the exeption of dried wax which is my bad =/
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
So I dropped by Metal Coaters today to speak with Taj. Nice guy, and still quoted me the TM3 member's pricing for powdercoating rims. He has a limited selection of colours, but can order others in at an added cost. Luckily, I found the colour I wanted in his palette. I feel he offers a great price and workmanship looks good, along with everyone's experiences here. I'm probably going to drop off my OEM rims to him soon, however, he cannot paint the wheel caps. How has everyone else here come around to getting that done, along with having the Mazda symbol masked?
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
I tried it my self.....EPIC FAIL!!!!! LOL
But I went with a gloss black so it was easy to match with spray paint if your going with a different colour I'm not sure how to tackle it.

What are his limited colours that you speak of?

Unfortunately, I cannot remember them all, but they were straight forward colours. It's best to just drop by and see his swatches, or call and ask to get a general understanding. As mentioned earlier, he would have to order other colours if not available. I ended up choosing a darker gunmetal swatch he had available. He did have the standard gunmetal colour there, but because I wanted a shade darker than gunmetal, but not black, I felt this was perfect for me.

Do your caps have the Mazda logo on it? If so, did you mask that, or just went buck-wild on the thing?

Gotcha, thanks!
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
To refinish the centre caps, pop the chrome logo out from the back by either using a Dremel to file down the tab. Paint the cap and the either glue or silicone the tabs and you have the emblem back in.

+1
I managed to pop out the emblems but broke a couple of clips. Nothing serious enough that I couldn't reattach the emblems after I spray painted the centre caps.
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
Just dropped off my rims with Taj today. Like Queue said earlier, he has a limited selection of colours in stock, but I was able to pick something out that I liked. Can't wait to get them back now and mounted on my car.

Which colour did you end up picking? I'm so ansi to get my set over there too. I'm just trying to get a hold of wheels with tires that I can borrow in the meantime while they're in the shop. I didn't purchase a winter set yet so I can't throw those on. Oh yah... plus no money yet! LOL
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
Picked mine up tonight (dropped them off on Tues). Took a quick shot with my blackberry...

I think they turned out great. I'll try and get some better pics tomorrow and hopefully I can get these on my car early next week.
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
^^ WOW! They look really nice, almost like shinkas in that photo.

Nice! Which gunmetal did you pick? I know he had only two to choose from. The standard one, and a darker one that he described to have a little more texture.
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
Pretty sure it was the lighter of the two. If you got a CWP and are thinking gunmetal, try out the darker one. That should look awesome as well.
Re: Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)
WOW what colour is that? ^^^^^ Price? Man I wish I had my winters on still! I feel like powdering my rims now.

That's the one I'm going with, the darker one!

It's just a standard gunmetal that Taj has instock. Total price was $200 for PC and $80 for the clear.

Can't wait to see how yours turns out. I was pretty close to picking the darker one as well, but I wanted something that was closer to the 'Shinka' finish.
