Not sure which direction to go
OK guys, after spending the summer with my new born, and working I had little time to get working on my car.
Now that winter is approaching, I want to plan out my project.
So far on my 2010 Speed,
I only have
Corksport SRI/TIP
Rear motor mount.
I'm looking to spend around $3000 not including labour costs to really make my ride something different... I'm open to any and all suggestions... bear in mind I want to keep it a legal ride so I assume the downpipe is out of the question, unless I can find a special inspector :)
-
Re: Not sure which direction to go
Cobb AP ~$600 (a must have)
HPFP pump internals ~$500 (another must have)
Coilovers ~$1200
A set of decent rims ~$1000
-
Re: Not sure which direction to go
Different or quicker?
Cobb AP for sure, HPFP is pointless unless you're getting a downpipe...although I don't see the problem with a catted downpipe and legality?
Whether you do rims or not, save some of that cash for a new set of rubber because you'll quickly eat through the OEM dunlops.
-
Re: Not sure which direction to go
That's a very open ended question.
Want more power? Better handling? Aesthetics? Bit of everything?

Special inspector? For what? Your ride is brand new, it won't need to be e-tested for 7 years.

Exactly. :P

Re: Not sure which direction to go
I want a bit of both... I'm going to buy a set of rims, I'm looking at $900 out of my budget for those.
The rest I want in power, I'm thinking on the Cobb Downpipe with the Corksport Catback (Lastly for sound)
I don't really understand how an accessport works, or how it's installed (right to the OEM access point?)
-
Re: Not sure which direction to go
I should also add, my mechanic said he will install the Cobb Downpipe and Corksport CB no problem as far as inspection goes (where I live most wouldn't do this because it's changing the OEM emission controls)

Re: Not sure which direction to go
The accessport plugs into the ODB2 port and reprograms the factory ECU with new "maps". Maps contain all the parameters used to control how much fuel/air/boost/etc are used in the combustion cycle.
-
Re: Not sure which direction to go
On a more serious note - I suggest a short throw shifter AND shifter bushings! It makes the car feel so much better!

Please elaborate on what you mean by "inspection"

Re: Not sure which direction to go
The Downpipe alone gives a great sound alone. Save the cash from the CBE and spend it on something else.
Spelingchampian, you had a Cobb STS right? How did you get rid of the 'click'?
-
Re: Not sure which direction to go
Do you own a speed??? I guess not........ I can tell you this.... There are several agencies that will rip your car apart and make you take the bus home.
MOE= Ministry of the Environment= Full police powers, and yes they can stop you on any highway or on any street within Ontario. They will rip your car about for every emissions violations that you do to the car......The fines aren't cheap.........
MOT= Minsitry of Transportation= full police powers, and yes they will rip you car apart for any mehanical failure or modifications. Serious fines and shit they will seize your car and good luck getting back....
So there you are about "inspections" . And yes they do ride checks for highly modded vehicles even like the 3 you drive.... Shit even your exhaust is illegal!!!!!
So don't open up a can worms here...... How do I know this shit....It's because I work with these agencies......
-
Re: Not sure which direction to go
Easiest way:
Grab a Cobb AP from NextMod.. Run Stage-1 Map
Install Racepipe/Test Pipe from Street Unit
Buy a Short-throw shifter, base bushings and the shifter weight
Have a blast and it'll go hella' quick to boot! You stay legal and gain lots of power for under $1,000.

What "click" lol?

Re: Not sure which direction to go
ebays got some good ideas...
lol but really just go over the members build pages.. grab the ideas you like and do them or maybe even add a twist to each. No one can tell you how to mod your car, its all about self expression so its how you feel about it and what you like.

What does owning a speed have to do with inspections and giving ideas on how to mod his car?
He kept talking about inspections, I've never heard of MOT or MOE randomly inspecting people's cars. I asked a simple question, just relax man.
And my exhaust is not illegal. If it was, then Mazda wouldn't be allowed to sell Speed3's.
I don't know why you are so angry, I just wanted to know what he was talking about when he said inspections.

Re: Not sure which direction to go
F^@k inspections.. God gave you a right foot and Mazda gave you a gas pedal and a whole lotta' gears.. Shift, spool and weeeeeeee!!
On a serious note, ahem.. Do what you feel. Lots of good input in this thread and you will find lots of info. roaming the board and searching for what may be best for you.
As well, pick up a better intercooler. It will help huge!

Awwww yeaaah!
Maybe start with new rims and see where it goes from there. Maybe you'll find a set of rims, and you'll be happy with the aesthetics and decide to go performance. Or maybe you'll decide that the performance is fine for now and you want to go with aesthetics.
The modding world is your oyster! And with 3000 you can get lots of different things done.

Re: Not sure which direction to go
Thanks a lot guys.
I had a chat on the phone with one of the guys from Corksport... considering my budget, I'm going to start a catless racepipe and CBE, simply because I want the little power gain from the racepipe, and the sound of the CBE.
I'm also going to order the rims... I'm just not sold yet on what else to do, so I'm going to do that and save the rest of the $$$ for the spring and think on it over the winter.
Inspections, here in NB where I now live, they check that the cat is intact as per manfacturer specs supposedly... my mechanic however said, long as it looks like there is some kind of a cat installed they pass it.

Re: Not sure which direction to go
^ Just a heads up: on a 2010, the corksport exhaust itself is quite loud. With a race pipe it's crazy loud, and with headers it literally sounds like a nascar. I'm not exaggerating, I'm dead serious. Kiyomi had it on his car for about a day or two before taking the race pipe out.
Just an FYI.

It's a mazdaspeed3. There are no "headers". Again, you cannot compare the sound from Kiyomi's car to a speed.

Really?! It's a speed3?! Where would I be without you to point this stuff out for me.
Wow, get off my ass, I'm trying to give him an example of how loud it will be.

Instead of being a dick and just saying "you're wrong", tell the person where they are wrong.
Have you listened to Snotrocket's exhaust? Kiyomi with his non-speed and corksport is almost as loud as snotrocket's exhaust, which is deafeningly loud.
either way, it doesn't change how loud the corksport exhaust is. especially with a race pipe.

I say that's a good idea. Take the winter to think it over.

Don't read into my tone when I make a post. I'm just telling it as it is. But I will take you all the way back to August, where we already had a very similar conversation. Which MajesticBlueNTO answered that question before I had a chance to.
here is the thread.
http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/sh...ht=#post810914
Instead of just jumping around from post to post, if you take the time to take in all the information, you might actually learn something and people wouldn't have to repeat themselves. No one is saying not to post in the mazdaspeed section but sometimes it's just distracting to the OP who obviously came here to learn something instead of being fed information which is inaccurate.
At the end of the day, you're the only person who's worked up.
Anyway, to give credit where credit is due, you mentioned Snotrocket's car. That was going to be the example I would have used, but you must keep in mind that his car has a full Ultimate Racing turbo back exhaust system (TBE) that is catless. Yes his car is loud (I stood 5 feet behind it during two 4th gear pulls at dyno day), however, I don't think that it is as loud as Kiyomi's car, and I've only heard his car since he's taken out the racepipe.
The OP did mention installing a racepipe along with the CBE but from his later posts, if he did change out the downpipe to the Cobb it seems like he'd be installing a catted version. Yes it'll be loud but it's not going to be as insane as you make it out to be.
I believe you've got it into your head that I am targeting you, or that I'm trying to put you down in every single one of my posts. Believe me, I'm not. So just relax.

The gain from the racepipe as you said would be little, but yeh it'll sound nice. Here's a question for you. If you're seriously considering the Cobb donwpipe, why not just hold off from buying the racepipe, since the Cobb dp will replace both of the factory cats anyway.
I know that the racepipes generally aren't very expensive, but when you do decide to upgrade the downpipe (since that is the real restriction), you'll have no use for the racepipe. I would factor in how soon in the future you'd be changing the downpipe to help decide if it's even worth buying the racepipe at all. I guess it all depends on where you want the car to end up performance wise.
Also, and hopefully someone with a GEN2 can chime in, I'm not sure how much you can really change without running the risk of running into fueling problems.
good luck, and happy modding.

This is according to COBB. If you're Stage 1 and under 17psi, then you don't need a fuel pump. If you're Stage 2 (removal of at least one of the cats) then you'll need a fuel pump. I ran into problems in the winter time when I just had the SRI+TIP and AP on a Stage 1 tune, so I think it depends on the car.
N00b, I don't think loki meant any harm. Most of the sound gets muffled by the turbo, so it's not really an apples to apples comparison when you compare an NA car vs a turbo car. However, snot's car is super loud and it's cuz he's got no cats at all.
I've heard that the CS CBE has drone in the cruising rpm, but those guys all have an aftermarket DP.
-
Re: Not sure which direction to go
My Gen1 Speed ran into fuelling issues with just the SRI and TIP alone, no other mods... but only when it was bitter cold -20C and below...
You guys have me all confuses now...
So I'm now thinking I'm going to order the Cobb Downpipe, plus the Corksport CBE.
Question however... if I do this I get a CEL right? (Is it possible to disable the light, not that I particularily want that)
Another... What exactly are you guys talking about fuel issues, is it going to be undriveable if I do those mods without doing more mods?

I'll let fywdyl answer this so there's less confusion. but it all has to do with the fuel pump and the fuel pressure.

Thanks for the helpful advice.
Honestly, I've owned a Gen1, loved it, managed to end up in a Gen2 through a good deal and a long story... still see my modded Gen1 driving around town makes me sad.
HOWEVER, my Gen2 is not even a year old, I'm not sure with how young the car is how crazy I want to go with my modding just yet... the racepipe/CBE gives no CEL and generally no major issues, just a bit more power, and a nice sound (or at least it sounds like it on youtube)
I'll admit, I race this car very infrequently, that being said I plan on buying some track tires/wheels to run on next year for track days so having more power is a definate plus.
I really do like the head turning effect, I think a set of rims will help with that. I like the inquisitive looks this car gets from people.
Bottom line, I want an angry looking, angry sounding sleeper.... (Quote a friend made of my car already)
-
Re: Not sure which direction to go
Well... screw it, Im an impulse buyer... just ordered the racepipe (catless) and the CBE... also... anyone have opinion of these rims on a Black Gen2?
