    Default Having fun with Plasti-Dip

    Hey everyone,
I just had such a great time with plasti-dip that I wanted to share my experience! So I have a 2007 black mica Mz3 GT Sport and my plan was to do my winter rims red and my snowflakes gold. I went to Peter at GTA Decal I bought 5 cans of red, black, and gold plasti-dip.
To start out I cleaned up the rims and got all the dust and dirt off them from last winter.

Probably the most annoying part of this whole experience was the playing cards. Keeping them in place was ridiculous but I wasn’t going to let that ruin the experience. I then started spraying!! I went to dipyourcar.com and followed their instructions to the “T.” The first layer was very light; you can barely tell I sprayed the rims. The only indication is the red on the playing cards.

After every layer I waited a minimum 30 minutes, even for the first few light layers. After 3 layers the rims look like this.

Im not gonna lie I was starting to get a little nervous that the rims looked so black still after 3 layers. However I kept on going, waiting 30 mins between each layer and sprayed 1 layer at a time. My enthusiasm continued to grow after every layer as the red got deeper and more predominant. This is four layers.

    This is 5 layers.

I squeezed 1 more layer before calling it a day (forgot to take a picture). The next day I sprayed 1 more layer, waited an hour, and then took the cards off and this was the final product.

When I took the cards off I noticed all that overspray on the tires which freaked me out, however after quickly trying to rub it off I realized how easy it was. It was like powder. So when I get some free time I will grab a toothbrush and a cloth and brushing it off. I also plan on taking the red off the air-valve because it was ridiculously hard to spray under the valve and coat the bottom of it. So instead of jeopardizing all my work and spray at an awkward angle, maybe spray to close/thick, and then have to redo the entire rim again I figured I would just forget it and rip it off later.
Also a big surprise is how little I used. I bought 5 cans of each colour however I only used 4 cans for 7 layers on my winter rims. My snowflakes are much less rim so im thinking 5 was wayyy to much, but I guess it’s always better to have extra just in case you need to do some touching up later on or if you have to redo a rim entirely.
After grinning from ear to ear looking at those rims I got a little impatient and rolled them up to my car and snapped a pic!

This is probably the first and only time I will say this but I cannot wait until winter!
Thanks for reading everyone! I had a tone of fun doing this and it came out great. I suggest everyone try it out, you will not regret it...... and if you do just peel it right off

nice job! i think plasti-dip is one of the best ways (other than vinyl) to protect your oem rims if you plan to use them in winter like I am

Although I think you did a good job of plasti dip, I think it looks kind of ghetto.

At the moment yes. But if it comes off the tires easily, I think it'll look great!

For me it's the steel rims "painted" red.

I dunno maybe in person it's better.

I still just feel that steel rims( I have steel winters, 15" at that. ) should be black.

Don't get me wrong. Im not hating. OP did a great job of plasti-dip. Just think it looks off.

BUT. Really, who am I. Some random Internet dude. Lol

Thanks everyone! Yea when I clean off the tires ill definitely update my pics cause I kno it looks kinda bad with the overspray.

I just wanted to do something different u kno. I was kinda getting tired of all black everything during the winter so why not spend a couple bucks on plasti-dip and make my car stand out from the rest of the millions of Mazda 3's on the road.

It does come in gold, it's a metallic finish so u have to spray ur rims black before u can spray them gold.
