    Default PCM PO171 Lean Bank 1 in 2013 speed3

    Hi All
I haven't drove my car for a couple of days and today when i drove it i noticed the check engine light on. I have a 2013 mazdaspeed3 with COBB AP, Go Fast BOV, COBB SF and COBB Inlet Tube, and catch can. When i ran the trouble shooting on the AP the code was defined as PCM PO 171 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1. Does anyone know what is the cause of this and how to fix. I cleared the code and drove to work with no issue and went out at lunch with no issue. but when i got back in the car after lunch and punched it the engine light came on again with the same code. Please Help Thanks

i will try that as a first test. i was also reading on the net at a caddy forum that it could be a vacumm leak. i don't think i have that either but i am gonna check my hoses on my Catch can. I don't know if it just uisn't getting enough fuel as i haven't changed the fuel pump yet

Sounds like you have a coupler or clamp that has come loose. Check all your connections going into the turbo and intercooler.

You probably have something loose or completely popped off.

is that high flow fuel pump? if so do i replace the one inside the tank as i was at the Heart for health and there was a guy there that said he upgraded his and he tried to show me it was in his engine bay. i figured that would be a filter. if it is the one in the tank is it hard to replace

High Power Fuel Pump, not in the tank, in the engine.
Look at CP-E pump, or Autotech internals.

Problem fixed. i pulled a stupid!!!!! looks like when i replaced my inlet tube i did not put the hose clamp back on for the hose that goes to the BOV. when i poped my hood just now i saw it was off and i just put it back on. I will still to do the HPFP but is it hard to replace if i get the Autotech internals one. because the CP-E is like $1200 because of the core charge. Thanks again all

The CP-E one goes down to around ~$700 when you return the core. Internals are a great option as well. As for difficulty, depends on your comfort level. Check with our sponsors, Alphamotorsports, I believe they carry the internals locally.

Pretty straight forward. I'd say about 1.5 hrs to do internals and 1hr just to swap pump and that is taking your time. Remove the battery and TMIC to make life easier.
I think I needed one torques (for internals)
socket I didn't have but other than that just normal stuff.

HPFP - high pressure fuel pump

our cars are direct injected. The injectors spray directly into the combustion chamber. This involves high pressure to atomize the fuel properly. Like 1600psi stock.

when you start to mod the car, it puts a higher demand on the HPFP. Slowly, you start to loose pressure, eventually you will start to get severe fuel cut because the HPFP craps out momentarily dropping fuel pressure. It feels like hitting a brick wall at speed, its that abrupt.

With my first gen speed3, i was hitting severe fuel cut with just an intake. If you let those conditions persist for too long, what happens is with those drops in fuel pressure, combined with cylinder 3 flowing 25% more air than the other cylinders, it goes lean (lots of air, little fuel) and detonates, and in extreme cases will blow up the piston, cracking ring lands, puts a hole in your block

internals have come along way now, i wouldnt bother with the CPE pump. If it fails, there goes your motor if you dont catch it in time, and good luck having CPE warranty it. I sent them a letter about my pump, never received any response back. Luckily, my pump was fine.

i helped a buddy recently with interals, it took about 2 hours doing it, we were in no rush, drinking beer.

i suggest, if you dont have a speed3, you do not respond to technical questions associated with our motors
Oh damn, that sucks. Oh well, I stopped reading the Speed section because according to certain people only speed owners are allowed to even look at that section.

I did my CDFP internals in about an hour. If you can use a torque wrench and follow instructions you should be fine. Make sure you have a good 'sterile field' and a proper bench to work at. Don't try and do the install on top of like, your intercooler...

Think of it like simple surgery. You want a good, clean workspace, that's well lit and stable. A good sized bench vise with a 3-4" jaw opening. Metric deep sockets and e-torx sockets and an appropriate ranged torque wrench. Have some gas for cleaning, and some engine oil for assembly and you're pretty much good to go.

It's simple, you just need to follow the directions carefully. Read them first before starting, and keep them handy or have a friend read and make sure you understand them before you get the pump apart.

Ok. I'm gonna see if I can order this week. I am moving out of my house and all my tools are staying in my garage. I WILL see if ex will go out with the kids and I can come back and do it on a weekend. I will try and run safe mode for a few weeks until I get it done. I AM also looking for a tmic by ets. Maybe I will find one and do both at the same time
