    Default HP Hard Disk Problem

Wanted to get some off topic advice. I bought my dad a brand new laptop on Sunday and just now, upon starting it up, an error message popped up saying that there's a hard disk problem and referenced the code 301. It warns of an imminent hard drive failure.

Anyone know what the issue is and if the hard drive is actually gonna fail?

I won't have time to take it back to Future Shop yet, but does anyone know if it would be possible to take it back and exchange it for a different laptop? Is there a time limit that I have to do this? I really don't wanna keep the laptop at this point nor do I wanna use HP's warranty to get the hard drive replaced. We've only had it for about a day so if the hard drive is already failing, I can't imagine what else is gonna fail. This was supposed to be a laptop that he could keep for a long time

I think you have 14 days to take it back and get a straight up exchange.

Take it back. You do have the 14 days.
But stay away from hp. I have one right now and it's the worst use of my money ever.

I have the hp envy and no problems here. Love it.

Edit: my dad also has one, and has no problems. I did have problems with Asus though.

I never bought an HP for myself before but I've always been told to stay away. Apparently HP is at the bottom of the pack in terms of reliability and Asus is at the top. I'm sure the HP I got was a lemon and one in a thousand but it's scared me off. I exchanged it for an Asus

Its a case of you get what you pay for. Failure rate for entry level HP is quite high, but their higher end stuff is great. I've had a couple problems with both Asus and Apple products, but have had nothing but great Dell experiences. Glad to hear things worked out!

HP is the worst. HP overheats, you'll notice it gets pretty toasty. Things will start to fail: hard drive, wifi, video card, cpu...

The build quality is also really bad, it's all cheap plastic. The Envy line up is better built, but still I hate HP.

    Go with ASUS, Lenovo, Apple.

I don't find my envy overheats at all, not super plastic either. I went through 3 Asus laptops, all 800$ laptops, and they all had the mousepad stick and they didn't close nicely. They felt plastic to me.

After researching the issue I had with HP, it apparently is common and someone said it was attributed to it running really hot. Giving Asus a try, hopefully it lasts. I've heard nothing but great things about it.

Like any other mass-produced product, you'll have some people who swear by one brand but have other people curse that same brand.

Little Xiao Mei could have been having a smog-induced asthma attack when she was assembling that laptop at the Foxconn factory and dropped the drive.

Through my travels, HPs have failed far more often than any other brand, followed by Dell.

Dell is the worst. Agreement to that

Go Lenovo. I've had two of them and they've proven to be nearly bullet proof

Lol that made me laugh. I know with any brand the hard drive could fail at any time so I guess we take a gamble regardless of what brand we get.

Most computer harddrives are Toshiba anyway. Computers are like cars now where a lot of parts are shared

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad at work and it's great, but the ones I've seen at Future Shop are really expensive. Would've gotten it if it was in my price range... My dad's laptop is for very basic use: email, internet, watching movies, uploading pictures, etc. so I couldn't justify spending $1000+. I paid $100 more for the Asus when I exchanged the HP so it wasn't too bad.

Sounds to me like someone's already owned that computer before, did something stupid, returned it, Futureshop re-packaged it and re-sold it to you.

If you return it, make sure you tell them you don't want a re-furb.

If you can, look into Acer. They are a solid brand with some good products.

Hp = help please, also notorious for HD failures. Use them at work and if the hard drive is good , they seem to last. I personally go for aver because they are budget brand and notebooks tend to have issues with either cooling or battery after a year anyways... Return it
