Default Tony Stewart / Kevin Ward accident

Not sure if anyone has heard of or followed this - or if it's already been posted.

But what are your thoughts on the tragic death of Kevin ward incident?

I don't want to believe that this incident was intentional - and I don't want to say "murder" - but this is truly a horrendous incident in racing

    +1 on that.

It was dark, the guy was on the track in a black suit and black helmet. It's entirely possible that Stewart only saw him at the last second; it's also entirely possible that whatever engine-revving/tail kick-out occurred was an instinctual reaction trying to avoid hitting him.

I'd like to think that if Stewart saw a guy on a racetrack, even if he in some way was angry that the guy was coming after him, he wouldn't intentionally try to scare him/hit him with the car. I know the "red mist" descends on competitive drivers (even regular drivers, hence road rage) but it is rare to find someone who doesn't back off when they realize their actions may have lethal consequences.

agreed, its a tragic occurrence, but one that should never have happened. Wtf was Ward doing on the track, while the cars were still running, in the dark, right after a corner where the cars are going sideways. The other two drivers who you see fly past only missed him by a foot or less, if it wasn't Stewart that got him, someone else would have

But to see Stewart put him in the cover to begin with - then be the one to actually run him over...

... The more I see and hear about - the more I think it was (at-least) semi-intentional.

Maybe he just meant to get close enough to back him off the track or scare him.

Maybe it was a "don't mess with the best" competitive attitude, or even a little road rage that got out of hand.

I'm no expert by any means - but if you know there's a car that's spun out at that corner - you're keeping your eyes open for debris, etc., that might be in your way.

Terrible to see this happen, does anyone know how fast these cars rip around the track?

I've seen people get hit by cars that are going much faster and they aren't wearing any protective gear and survive. I saw the video but it didn't look like he was going that fast... likely got him in the wrong spot.

~1400 pounds, 800-1000 hp, 160 mph top speed, direct drive.....at idle the things must be doing 35 mph.

Semi-intentional is possible, but at the same time.. he was running around in oncoming traffic. Is there not a rule to remain in your vehicle unless pending fire danger?

only reason why its being dragged on is because he's "famous". if it were a regular guy it would be different. a lot of things happened on both ends, and in the end someone died. to me this looks like manslaughter.

so far it seems like he's getting off scot free. in my opinion, thats total bullshit.

stewart probably wanted to kick dirt at him which might be why theres a rev, things didnt come out according to plan and ward got hit. then you got a 20 year old up coming professional. its easy for young people to become full of themselves and think theyre invincible with a "come at me bro" way of thinking.

much like how car guys are more likely to be hit by a car, because theyre more comfortable with being close to a moving one.

Not sure if you're defending Stewart or Throwing the book at him LOL

    BUT

Someone died. Should someone have to pay for it if it truly was an accident? They're in a dangerous profession - and they knew death on the job was a possibility.

It's like pro hockey and football players suing the league because they get concussions. Sorry to say it - but you kinda get paid the millions of dollars under the assumption that you know you're going to get injured at some point of your career.

Stewart may, or even likely put him into the wall on purpose. That's racing.

I don't believe he meant to hit him. I'm sure he's had someone charge his car before, that stuff happens all the time in NASCAR.

With outlaws you steer with the throttle. It doesn't turn unless you slide it. I have to think if he were trying to hit him he's just drive into him

Well i saw the video. The guy definitely deserved it for running out into traffic. Someone would have hit him sooner or later... you can see him attempt to stop traffic and then step back several times.

ward literally jumping into traffic (a live race track at that) was asking to get darwined. what did he expect was going to happen? even at caution speed. he knew the consequences and circumstances of being then and there by being part of the race. its tragic that he lost his life but ultimately that was his fault for making himself a target.

stewart caused death with/without intention. should he pay for it either way? should there be consequences? if there was intention, he must of thought "im famous enough and in the right situation to make it look like an accident and get away with it". but he can just as quickly flip the story and say "i didnt mean to cause death and im famous enough where everyone will listen to me". tony stewart is idolized by a lot of people and its hard to say if he will ever suffer consequences.

some key factors that can give a lot of insight is the type of relationship steward and ward had behind the scenes away from publicity. were they chummy with each other or did they hate each other. interviewing other racers and affiliated companies may not give a true insight to what tony is like. as they can skew what they say because of the nature of the sport and business.

they would need to peer into his private life away from racing to know what he's truly like behind all the glitz and glamour. that in itself is why almost nobody can say anything about his intentions.

You wouldn't be able to hear his engine from across the track like that. Not with the amount of cars also whizzing past the camera.
