@Elusivellama which intake are you running with you car?
Speaking of corksport, funny enough, their turbo inlet pipe will help with the smoking turbo.

.... I'm running the Corksport power series intake. And yes, I realize that the $30 bolt is the complete opposite of a turbo replacement, but when I posted I wasn't exactly sure what the quick fix would be. I did some research, found out about the idle thing and implemented it in the maps. Now I'm going to try the bolt with a slightly lower rpm (running at 1200 now, drop it to 1100 and keep going until I hit 1000 or the turbo stops smoking).
If none of these hack jobs work, then I'll buy a proven solution.

The vent breather hose

Damn that search took longer than I wanted, but I found the post

and posted...
Corksport Intake and Inlet:
As you can see from this photo, the Corksport design moves the valve cover fitting down onto the Turbo Inlet Pipe itself.
Corksport Inlet:
The corksport inlet comes in 2 options. With the valve cover fitting, which works with the corksport intake, AND without the valve cover fitting which works with most (if not all) other intakes
Cobb Intake and Inlet:
You see in these pics that the Cobb SRI has the valve cover fitting directly on the intake hose. The Cobb Turbo Inlet Hose does not have a valve cover fitting, as it assumes that it'll be on the intake portion.
the smoking turbo fix relocates this valve cover fitting onto the inlet pipe. For this to work, they then will block off the valve cover fitting on your intake, as they did with my Cobb SRI. For this reason, if you have say a Cobb SRI, and you have had the smoking turbo fix, you'll have to order it WITH the valve cover fitting and in the end the combination of Cobb SRI and the Corksport Inlet Pipe will be identical to the Corksport full set up (intake and inlet).
make sense?

This thing? http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...rt-tip-119907/
Dang, I'm almost sure that I bought my intake before 2012.

To add to the turbo discussion. I have a friend in ottawa with the CA turbo. So far he is really enjoying it. Similar spool to the stock k04, but flows much more air up top. Both the CS and the bnr s3 make similar power with similar mods. The CS has a little more bling, and may have more headroom when pushing it hard. That billet wheel is nice that's for sure. Along with the billet wheel, the gtx28 series is also dual ball bearing, whereas the cs and bnr remain journal. Food for thought.

@tanspeed3 - how was that trans swap this weekend in the heat? LOL
- 2021 Porsche Macan GTS -
- 2016 Lexus NX200t F Sport -
- 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 Black Mica - SOLD -

Well....we got er. Kinda a pain to do on jack stands, but it wasn't to bad. Honestly swapping a turbo is more of a job than the trans lol. We got it out without pulling the subframe, but we dropped it when we put the trans back in. Made it alot easier. We replaced the release bearing, 1 axle seal and put in my oem clutch disk as matt's had seen better days lol. I must say though, for being an 8 year old car, it was super clean. Every bolt came out awesome, nothing stripped. It has to be noted, a summer only driven car is much much nicer to work on lol.
@mazdaspeeding can add more im sure.

@MajesticBlueNTO has just told me that they also change the valve cover itself as part of that fix.
which now that I think about it, my valve cover was replaced when Mazda did the smoking turbo fix for my car.

Probably this one?

yes

When I get home I'll compare my stock TIP with the diagram.

It seems like ball bearing is the way to go, I was reading about it on the web and it just seems better in every respect. Thanks for the info. If I do end up replacing the turbo, I will strongly consider the GTX28R series.
Edit: Just to reiterate for anybody else reading this thread - I'm trying the restrictor bolt and a higher idle first. If the smoking goes away entirely, then that's that for now. If my local Mazda dealer is okay with doing warranty work and replacing the turbo with a new stock K04, so much the better (I've spoken with one of the guys there, and he says the dealership is pretty mod friendly, but we'll see).
If all else fails and I have no cheap options remaining, then I will have to get a new turbo and it'll likely be the GTX28R one.

Keep in mind the GTX will cost almost double what the Corksport will.
The CS is $1100 USD
The GTX2867r is $1750 USD but doesn't come with gaskets and requires a new coupler or inlet, so add another $100 at least.
Then add in tax/duty/ship/exchange/etc.
I've figured a GTX2867 for myself if I were to swap would be around $2500-3000 all in. I've already got a widepath but I'd probably get a 3 bar MAP while I'm at it too.

and to get the full benefit you'd also want to replace the turbo manifold
@Elusivellama I would speak to Mazda first. My car went in fully bolted stage 2 and they fixed the smoking issue for me.

Yeah I figured as much by looking at the price, but if I gotta do it, then I'll do it.
@loki Yeah, I already spoke with the local dealership. Which dealership fixed the issue for you?
