Anyone know how long plated rotors last before rusting?
Anyone know how long plated rotors last before rusting?
the plating on the face of the rotor that makes contact with the pad doesn't last very long...maybe after a week or so of driving it's gone.
Are you looking at slotted, blanks or cross drilled?
well obvioulsy. but then again, after a quick drive, any rust would be gone anyways.
i think the OP means rusting in the holes (lol), and on the edges.
as far as i know, you can get them plated, to reduce/prohibit rust.
but i have no experience with them, so i cant give you a positive answer
The coating doesn't last long, you'll have to put up with surface rust eventually.

right?

My dad's civic has a set of cross drilled KVRs that were CAD plated. Rust started to develop after the 3 month mark in the holes. I know this because I kept having to service the calipers as one of the slider pins was giving some trouble. The rotors were installed in the summer time. After 5 months I noticed rust starting to develop in the vents, but it was very minor.
Thanks guys... I was hoping it would last at least a year without rusting. The non-contact area of the rotor of course.
I was wondering that to with drilled rotors. I like the look of them, but was wondering too about rust. I think that would be a PITA to keep them looking good.

A quality "coated rotor" should last several years without showing signs of rust on the non-contact areas but they will rust eventually, you would probably need to replace them by then anyways due to wear.Personally I would stay away from drilled as they do not improve braking (under normal driving) and theres just more chance of rust and cracks. Also you might want to stay clear of Cadmium coatings as they are highly toxic and not very good for the enviroment. At the moment I am pricing out a set of rotors, for our 3's which are slotted and zinc-coated.I'll post again when I get the info.

^good point...I shall ask the seller about that.
^It very well could be. The car is going to undergo some major work this summer so I'll be going to brembo blanks with Project U (insert 'mu' symbol there) pads.
stocks are good enough tho, they done the decent job.
I had my rotors cadium (sp?) plated before i picked them up more than 6 months ago and not a single spec of rust (from what i can see). I have the magnum cross drilled rotors.
Edit... Didn't know they were highly toxic... good to know and i'll be sure not to purchase them in the future.

Well I've decided I'm going with the same set-up as GFX; the Hawk HPS pads, I was tempted to try ceramic pads and they are only about $20 more, but everyone seems to be happy with the HPS, so whom am I to oppose convention...As for rotors, I'm also going for the Magnums (coated) since I found out about the coating being zinc-cadmium and for the money (same price as OEMs) they offer alot more; coated, directional venting, etc; and a few people on the board gave them a pretty good rap...I also found that its near impossible to find blank rotors which are coated, mind you, you could always buy them and have them coated somewhere but then you'd have to worry about keeping within the OEM dimensional specs.

I'll be picking up my rotors next week. I'll post pics as soon as I get em!
Well I'm hoping the life of the rotorsI'd expect them to last about 80k maybe. If you don't care about them being coated, you could always just get the Magnum uncoated, they are basically the same rotors and are painted on the fins, hud etc; and are about $40 cheaper.
