shifter notchy and slight grinding felt in cold

Whenever it gets cold my shifter gets notchy. Now in third a get a slight grind ( I dont hear anything) felt through the shifter. When the tranny is hot it never happens only when its cold. Does anyone have a solution to this? Redline oil? How common is this on mazda 3? I also have the mazda 3 second gear notchiness as well, but I guess that normal. Any imput would be great.

This is why i like to let my car warm up for a bit..this happens to alot of the manual trans.

This is extremely common on the 3. Search the forum and you will find bucket loads of info. If you don't want to modify / upgrade anything, you'll have to live with it. Otherwise try tranny fluid, motor / tranny mounts, shifter bushings, or a short shifter with shifter bushings.

What's the mileage? Ever had a fluid change? I haven't had to many issues but always wait until my car is out of open loop before taking off.

It's the gear oil, go out and purchase some Redline 75W-90ns, throw it in and your problem will be solved.....trust me...But don't expect it to work overnight! It'll take several hundred kilometers before you feel the difference.

That may be what they say but I'm just going by my personal experience; I went for the ns type because of the fact it's better for the syncros...slows them down a bit and protects them better....Coldest day last winter -45 or something stupid like that with the windchill my car sat out for 12 hours, I started her up, ran her for 2 minutes and drove off, no notchiness or grinding just smooth as butter shifts.....what else can I say!

75W90NS is a GL5 fluid, which is NOT recommended for mazdas due to the fact that its EP additives (sulfur) are corrosive to the brass synchros
MT90 is a GL4 fluid which is SAFE for mazdas

so if you're happy with the 75W90NS, all the power too you... but MT90 is THE fluid people should be putting in

That's funny cause my owner's manual states clearly GL4 or GL5(non-MS3)...You think I would use a GL-5 if it was NOT recommended?....read your owner's manual or shop manual before you start making claims!!....I did my research and spoke to a couple of Master techs before I switched!! ...Also your completely wrong about additives, as a matter of fact the 75w-90ns has improved copper corrosion protection to prolong synchros life.

Yes it does, I believe the 2010's manual transmissions call for API GL-4 (only) and SAE 75W-80 (only)

I"m gonna bring my car in for engine oil change in a month and I'll probably get the guys there to put redline into my tranny while they have my car jacked up

Mine is stiff and notchy too when cold. Just warm it up longer.
