Smile Mazda 3 vs Competition in Compact Sedans.. Insurance?

    Dear TM3 members,

My parents and I are in the plans of buying a 2010 Mazda 3 GS where my dad is the primary driver and I (22 year old with a G2) will be listed as a secondary driver.. I am calling different insurance companies for quotes.. and the lowest i got is 350$ for both of us with comprehensive 500$ deductible.. Would it be lower with other vehicles such as Corolla, Civic, Sentra, etc. Anyone have experience? Let me know

when you're calling for the quotes why not just ask them? It'd be WAY faster plus you'd have the actual rate, not one made up by someone on these forums.

Don't have numbers but from previous experience, the difference between different cars in the same segment usually would be within +/-10% only. Get the car you like most instead of worrying insurance.

See if you or your dad is affiliated with any organizations (companies/schools/caa/memerships) to quality for any group discounts, go ask each one of the insurance companies that you like and who offers the best rate.

It would also depend on how many vehicles and drivers there are. 2 drivers and 2 cars will be very close to being two primary drivers because logic has it that one primary driver can't be driving two cars at the same time. If it was only one car, it would be more likely a few hundred more than what the primary driver would have paid normally.

From personal experience, since there are too many variables to be anything but subjective at best, i found the mazda3 to be the cheapest, followed by the wagon version, when compared to the alternatives such as corolla, matrix, elantra and sentra. I got a quote for $229 for myself (a year younger than you but with G + one ticket) and my parents as the principle drivers; insurance company being The Personal. I am not entirely as to why it was significantly cheaper than its alternatives in my situation, but the best way to find out would be to call TD or check online if their website allows you simulate changes.

I'm with The Personal as well, my premium actually dropped when I switched to the Mazda3 Sport. Drove a Pontiac G5 before and I was expecting my rate to increase, so that was a pleasant surprise when I switched.

How is The Personal as a company? Have you made any claims with them?

I made a claim with them a few months ago. My trusty corolla was written off and being that it was my first accident, i was expecting to get a low valuation for my write off but i was pleasantly surprised with the offer they gave me right away. Im not sure if all insurance companies are like that but i remember a few years back when my dad was with another insurer he had trouble with them picking up the bill for some of the repairs as a result of an accident. I certainly wouldnt mind staying with them when it comes time to renew, but only if their is no increase in premiums lol.

If you want a quick comparision this site is preitty good to get an idea of what certain cars cost to insure http://www.kanetix.ca/.

I'm with Belair and I pay $155 a month, when I checked for myself civic was the worst (apparently they get stolen a lot), lancer, sentra, focus and corolla were a bit better. The cheapest was the Pontiac Vibe, Mazda 3 Sport was second cheapest I looked at. I was quite surprised seeing as it was the sportiest car I looked at (I guess some might say lancer). Belair classes the Sport as a compact wagon which lowers the premiums a bit. But things might work out differently for you.

i pay around $290 a month, 2 drivers, 2 cars. i'm with bel-air. i check out other companies every year when my renewal is coming up. i'm still with them until now. also consider your age too, younger drivers get higher premiums, and also how long you've had your G. Having a G2 will make you have higher premiums than somebody who is holding a G license as well. but don't let this affect what kind of car you want to buy, like other people have said. i'm sure if you settled for a certain car you didn't like, yes you pay less for insurance, but you get pissed off everytime you get in the car. if you don't care and see the car as only an instrument to get from point A to point B, then you don't really care what car you drive, this time go for the cheapest to insure. driving records affect your insurance a lot too.
