Being South Asian all the customs of a proposal and engagement are so different from... well for lack of a better term "The Christian World".
Had a few setbacks along the way, but after 3 years its finally done, huge load ooff my mind.

House is def very important, i'm planning to get married around Oct 2011, being with my girl friend for 3 years has really given us alot of time to save, just a matter of researching what to buy, where to buy it, and when!

But i agree finanacial security and a place to live trump everything else..

Congratulations, I'm happy for you both! I got married earlier this year and well planning was definitely something! It's INSANE the amount of time, work, sweat that's involved in planning for a wedding!

Not in an exciting way at all lol.. For those who don't know I am Muslim, so its a bit different when it comes to proposals.

I've known my gf for 3 years met her at university, at about the 2 year mark we decided we wanted to go forward with it and get engaged. so we both knew we were going to go forward. Instead of a straight proposal between the guy and girl. You have to get your families involved and this triggers basically a series of meetings between the families.

first few meetings are to get to know each other (families)
in the next meeting, it is usually the guys parents who ask for the girls hand. If her parents agree you hug share some traditional sweets and set a date for the engagement.

At the engagement you go over as a family to the girls place, and do the whole ring thing, as well as taking gifts for the girls family, the guys side also tends to give money or a jewellery set.

Then finally both families exchange traditional sweets (large quantities), these are then given out to close family friends to inform everyone of the engagement..

So it has been a long drawn out process!

and of course the weddings are ATLEAST 3 days long..

Haha I completely know what the process is like. I doubt my process will be like this though...I am too North Americanized to go through it!
