Default Yet another cupholder glow mod... but different...

So, I've been wanting to get onto this for a long while. Today I finally decided to give it a go.

I've finished my measurements and my stencil/diagram.
    [

    now on to step two...

any guesses as to how I'm going about this?

    PS. I hope it works.

aaannnddd. after a trip to emerg. I've finished the next stage...
    - note, wearing safety goggles while cutting plexi is indeed a good idea, it's also important to wear them while clearing the dust that is produced...

or you'll end up in the hospital to remove a very tiny spec of plastic from the inside of your eyelid...

next up is a few indents for LED's and the wiring... almost there.

Interesting, I have had a bunch of plexi for awhile which I have had no idea what to do with. Hmmm

So I finished it up last night and got it in the car this morning.
2 blue LED's in series, and a momentary (normal off) switch which is triggered by the lid when open. otherwise, just cut and shaped piece of plexi that was salvaged from an old computer case I built once-upon-a-time.

I pulled power from the "CIGAR" fuse via add-a-circuit, so that I'd have a switched source and didn't have to deal with taps. -> laziness kicking in.

At some point I'm going to pull it out and paint the top side matte black so there's no glare from the LED's.

PICS!!! (sorry for the bad quality) I'll try to get a pic tonight once it's dark with a better camera.

Is it gonna be on both sides? I like how you have it triggered to the lid

likely just the one side. if I did both sides I'd be cutting a slice into the actual cup holder. I'd be afraid that it'd lose most of it's rigidity... I had thought about it, just didn't know how to go about doing it without breaking the functionality.

I put this one in the gap below "side-wall" that moves with the lid. doesn't get in the way of cups/travel mugs. It works, turned out okay I think. of course, with everything, it could be better. haha. hot gluing the LED's in place is less than elegant.

Very nice work - looks great!

Also, good thinking setting the switch to the lid position. No sense in powering the LEDs while it's shut, after all.

Thanks all! Came together fairly well. Still a little light leakage from the top of the plexi.

It does glow nicely though. The second shot is a little blurry, but shows it in comparison to the rest of the interior lights.

Also seems to come across as a little bit brighter in the photo than it actually is in person.

OK, now that I lived with it for a few days (still loving it!!). I do wish I could see the band of light from the drivers side, what a rip!
I've decided I need to do something about the top.

I'd thought about maybe something like vinyl. Is there anywhere I can get a small (8" x 2") piece without too much hassle? either pre-"glued" or something that I could use some spray contact glue on? paper would work, but too easily ruined by moisture.

Painting it, while doable, has too much margin for error for my liking. If I screw something up I could wind up having to redo the whole thing... not fun.

    anywho, suggestions are welcome!
    Thanks.

PS. I wish I could edit in the finished, night pics into the original post *tear*
