Which "should" last the life of the engine. I have known them to fail on other manufacturers vehicles. It's not very common though.

You mean the alternator and/or AC belt? Neither would cause the car to run funny or hesitate if they are slipping.

If the alternator belt slips badly or breaks then the warning light on the dash will come on but the car will keep running for a while, until the battery dies. Of course if this belt breaks your water pump stops turning and the engine will overheat very quickly. Depending on the year of the car you have a temperature gauge or warning light to let you know if this happens.

If the AC belt breaks you just won't have any AC.

Here I go showing off my lack of car knowledge again!

Hit up Mr. Lube yesterday where they told me my timing belt is loose and needs replacement. They also said something about tension, but after reading the forums he may have meant tensioners (as if I know what that is, lol).
I come on here and read we don't use belts, but chains that should last a lifetime. So WTF is Mr. Lube talking about?

Mr. Lube was likely saying "Give me money"

Beyond malice and bad business practice, there's also the chance it was incompetence. In the late 90s, early 2000s, I had brought my old E34 in for drive clean testing at a small shop. The monkey, who was holding a cigarette as he opened the gas cap, asked me if it was a diesel because he couldn't see any spark plug wires...

They could have meant accessory belt and belt tensioner?

Normally belts don't give warning before they go, that's why it's usually imperative to change them on time. Chains can cause issues (and belts) if they jump time, making the timing of hte engine off and causing major vibrations and other unpleasant symptoms
