    Default Rim cleaner

Before putting my summer tires back on, I was planning on cleaning my rims. OEM 17'

I'm hearing powder coated, polished, unpolished, clear coated, blah blah rims. I've read that the '10 oem are clear coated??

I'm hearing Meguiars is good, and they got Hot Rims Aluminum Wheel Cleaner and Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner. Which one would be safer for my rims?

and i've heard people putting wax on their rims as well...i guess that's regular body wax?

I use Turtle Wax ICE Tire Shine and Cleaner for my powder coated rims. Works pretty good at cleaning off brake dust.

I wouldn't suggest using any kind of rim cleaner if your rims are scratched or have curb rash. Could make them worse.

If I may share my experience with my OEM rims, I've always cleaned them with the car shampoo that I have left in my bucket. My wheels have that clean and shiny look as well. A friend from work uses Meguiars Hot Rims on his OEMs and it looks nice albeit a bit pricey....at least for my wallet.

If you are cleaning them often, say once or twice a wheel, then soap and water with a brush should be enough. If not then a rim cleaner works well although there are some concerns with how corrosive some are. Best thing to do is use a natural citrus cleaner and let it soak in for a while, then just soap and water.

Honestly, try just using a lemon you'll be amazed at how well it will clean grease.

Soap & water wash, then rim cleaner, then wax seems to do the trick for me!

What I found to work pretty well if you haven't waxed your wheels is to use soap and water with a brush BEFORE you spray any water onto the wheel. If you do wax your wheels good before you put them on for summer just simply soap and water with a brush works fairly well as the break dust doesn't really stick to the wheel. And lastly, wash your wheels on a regular basis.

I've tried the 'Hot Rims' product and didn't work too well on brake dust and grime. I've just been using all purpose cleaner or detergent along with this:

    http://www.onescrub.com/

Great at scrubbing away at anything on your rims and doesn't scratch it. Don't believe that stuff that tells you to just spray it on and basically walk away, you have to put a little bit of elbow grease into it at least.

Available from Home Hardware for $2.29 single or $6.29 for quad. Re-usable like a sponge and doesn't cling onto the dirt. Just cleaned my all-seasons last weekend with this as I'm planning to change over from winters this weekend.

Simple Green Automotive from Cdn. Tire or Zellers. Works great and is bio degradeable.

#2 to simple green, it is safe to use, I wouldn't use spray nine, I used that stuff once on my travel trailer and it left streaks right in the paint that never came out even with buffing.

+1 to the left over car wash soap/water in the bucket from washing the car for the rims. At least it's not wasted...

P21S wheel cleaner. Pricey, but not acidic and it works.

DAWN Plus power scrubbers! (Blue bottle with the Penguin on it)+wash pad, simple yet works awesome. Then a couple of coats of wax will make your rims look new.You can also use Dawn to wash the vehicle when you'd like to strip the 'ol wax off her and do the 'ol clay and wax.

I use simple green (diluted 50% with water - so 1 bottle gets you 2 bottles of 50/50 mix) or the P21S cleaner.

I wax the wheels after to protect the clear/paint on the wheels and to make cleaning the next time a little easier.
