p2187 is back after a purge valve change

So I got the p2187 code a few weeks ago... after some reasearching i was told it was most likley the purge valve... well it came back a week after the purge valve was changed .... what else could it be ?

any mazda techs? any thoughts ....
car has 2005 53000 km on a 2.3 liter.... clean car

I just picked up a knock off gas cap (Stant) for 20 bucks new...


can a gas cap throw that code.....
anyone....

A faulty gas cap can throw a code. I'm not sure what kind of code it would throw though.

if so can I clean it with this this throttle body cleaner i used to clean my throttle last year when it was caked with carbon ect....

could be the maf or its wiring
check for vacuum leaks too

ok so i just picked up a bottle of gunk maf cleaner, just took it off and im going to give it a spray.....


I also stuck my head in the engine with the engine cover off and lising for a leak and i could not hear one... but What do I know....

I checked the connections on the purge valve and of the blue tubes beside it. I made sure my airbox and such was tight to the throttle body and Im going to tighten my throttle body as well *i had that off last year to clean up all the carbon that gave me a rough idle*

What I know so far
-I dont have a rough idle
-never had problems starting on emtpy or full
- the gas mileage seems to be ok ( im going to document it now)
-Im also making a car log of how many times I stop and start - warm/cold and how many times I crack the gas cap....

Since purge valve was replaced and still same issue it sounds like an oxygen sensor. I'm sure Jimmy will tell you the same thing.

It was a nice day today, I took my cover off and stuck my head in the engine bay and I could not see/hear a air leak. I used a tiny wd 40 bottle and sprayed around the intake and various pipes seeing if the engine would bog down or see stuff get sucked in... nothing

I cleaned the MAF with the right cleaner - it was pretty clean I also re-cleaned throttle body (it was getting dirty after only 15,000km)
I also checked the gasket on the throttle body but i could not see anything...

what a pain in the ass ill feel better once i put another few tanks of gas in the car and dont get that code...

on a side note the 2 screws that hold the MAF in place one of them just spins and does not seem to make a great seal. the other one is nice and snug....
Can I use a slightly larger screw, they look like wood screws to begin with ....

sounds like you found your problem
you can try to use a bigger screw, but if it were me, I'd just fill the screw hole with glue, let dry, then put the screw back in

ok i was about 2 mins away from putting a slightly larger screw in....

Ill try the glue idea first... but what kind of glue ? super glue ? Will I be able to take out the maf if I have a problem agian.....

bah i just used a slighty larger screw and it is super snug now..

i hope that screw was causing the 2187 but who knows
