    Question plasti-dip gold

so i just picked up 4 cans of plasti-dip metalizer for my rims today from Peter (big props to him). According to the can it says that it must be sprayed on top of an already dipped surface. I saw a video on youtube from dipyourcar.com where fonzi shows that you can easily peel off the metalizer from rims that were sprayed with it only. The rims seemed to look very light gold in colour compared to others i've seen that have been dipped with black first. has anyone dipped their rims gold over their bare rims without dipping in black first? mine are silver so im wondering if it wont be dark enough.

From the look of what fonzi was showing, the gold metalizer is just clear coat plastidip with metal flakes, so what ever is underneath has a good chance of showing up on top.

hmm i see but im sure it has to have a gold colour too it since the clear is just clear lol...im thinking that having the black dip underneath will give it a more richer colour.

Having the black underneath will give it a richer gold texture. It does have gold color, but I believe all the gold is just the flakes. So one layer of metalizer will give you flakes with the underlying color still showing, another layer gives you a darker gold etc. That was my understanding from the Dipyourcar video. Maybe someone else like Rey can chime in on this.

I believe dipyourcar sells wheel kits with the metalizer on top of any base color such as Red/White/Black. Im sure you can use the metalizer on any base. For example I wouldnt use black plastidip on my already black rims before the metalizer.

yeah I would have ordered the kit from dipyourcar.com if they shipped to Canada im just gonna give each rim a coating of black first and then 3 layers of the gold dip on top

Marta, if you soak em in bleach (i.e. strip them) I'll paint em for you.

I don't really use plastidip, primer + paint and it'll never come off!

Just dip the whole rear and peel the extra off.

Tape off a portion of the area so you dont get overspray, and spray around the emblems about 1-1.5 inches. That makes it easier to peel off later. Imo the PITA is the little areas around the "Mazda" letters, even with a tooth pick i peeled some off the edges... twice.

Even better, do it straight on your grass without anything under it to protect the grass, and then you won't ever have to mow again

For the Mazda word it is definitely easiest to just take it off and spray it.

For the front it is. For the back I think it would be more trouble than its worth to take them off.
