Why do MS3's have such high HP????

Hey all, sorry if this is a nooby kinda question, but im just a little curious. the ms3 is a 2.3 t engine that puts out something like 270hp and a tonne of torque. a buddy of mine has an audi a4 with a 2.7 twin turbo that only makes 250hp. what is going on here???

You are forgetting that Germans have this tendency to quote their wheel horse power vs the American and Japanese crank horsepower figures. That's why the GTI actually has something like 230 crank according to various dyno runs around the web.

That being said the DISI is direct injected and I am not sure your buddies' older Audi has direct injection.

You are comparing a fairly old car with a fairly new car... Btw, A4 never had 2.7 TT, only the S4 did lol

The evo and JDM STi is 2.0 and makes 280-300hp

but i love my 2.0L mazda 3.. fuel econ for the win! not all of us live 5 km from work andrew . so for your 400 km per tank is wicked, but when i drive my 110km to and from work. i need that 756 km per tank.. now if i could do it faster that would be fun with the same fuel econ wouldnt that be fun..

It's probably because of the way they measure the power, the compression ratio, and the amount of boost being run.

How do you think the STi with a 2.5L makes over 300HP whereas the Speed3 makes 260HP. On the other hand a 335 only makes 330HP with a 3.0L.

It really depends on what the goal of the car is.

Audi is a luxury sports car. Drivability is a strong factor.

If you were to ask me which I'd take on a 2,000km road trip, i'd take the audi.

Theres a trade off between Drivability, Gas consumption, Reliability and longivity.

The CX-7 has the same engine with some tweaks, but it is tuned differently.

Also the same reason why some people can get 9000hp out of a toyota supra - But 4,000km on an engine. Tradeoffs!

When dealing with turbo charged cars, you can't really compare apples to apples... It's all different. You can have a 2.3L vs a 2.0, with the 2.0L making more power... It pretty much comes down to the size of the turbos and the tune. You can easily reverse the tables. There are other factors, such as engine breathing (intake / exhaust), direct injection vs port injection, and of course the engine's design and build quality.

The MS3 has a tiny turbo which gives it an insane kick with almost no lag, but it maxes out very easily... and the stock tune gives the car a very narrow power band. I couldn't stand the stock MS3 tune... My last car was a high revving V6 with a 7500 rpm redline

Same reason why my old Honda made 200HP with 2.2L and Mazda3 2.5L only makes 170HP. Different technology, tuning and design.

right on, i appreciate all the input and comparisons to colors, water and fruit. i am starting to accept the fact i guess that different tunes and what not make a difference in power. i also clearly see how the engine and all the different intakes and exhaust systems would help gain, or loose hp, depending on how restricting each system is. But its still just seems so odd to me how larger engines can produce less power.
i guess size doesnt matter, its how you use it haha <--- im surprised no one used that yet. haha

you probably don't remember cars from the late 70s that were crippled in terms of power output after the "gas crisis".

example, a Mopar 318 cubic inch (5.2L) engine with a 2-bbl carb from 1979 put out 140 CRANK hp @ 4000 rpm and 245 ft-lbs of torque @ 1600 rpm ...modern day 2.0L diesel numbers

Water, in large quantities, has a naturally blue tinge. The MS3's engine is DI, newer technology, smaller turbo that spools up faster, and is simply just made out of win. Also:
