The only thing the gen one is faster at than the gen two is in 0-60 times...quarter mile is the same (1/2 mile the gen 2 would pull ahead), gen 2 is faster in the slalom and better on the skid pad. The gen 2 has revised gearing, a more reinforced chassis, revised suspension, is more aerodynamic...etc yes it got heavier by a bit but it's still a better car.

I actually really like the speed6, but IMHO it doesn't compete in it's class in terms of weight and overall performance. This is a car equipped to race evos and stis, or at least ralliarts and wrxs, and doesn't really provide the oomph people want, this is why its discontinued.
Got a variety of OEM Mazda 3 parts that need to go, thread coming soon, PM me for details!
V6 turbo would be sweet.

V6 turbo on a speed3 would be sweet.
This thread has gone from dumb, to stupid.
There is no better gen for speeds, everywhere you look one is better than the other in the end its a tie.
I bought a gen2 because Mazda corrected a lot of things I didn't like on the gen1.
Small things such as I can roll down my driver window on the highway and my girlfriends hair stays in place and I can talk to her without yelling. You can't really put a price on that.
I don't care about the smile, I rarely ever even see it.
A V6 turbo 3 would just be stupid, the chassis dynamics will make the car slow, never be able to hold traction not to mention handle like canoe down a ski hill.
Want to work on your car but not sure how, send me a PM. Learn the way of Nator.
Swineflu, don't come in a speed3 section and keep making jabs at the speed3s because you think the speed6 was better. Mazda thought it was so great that they stopped making them.
Most of us here if we wanted a speed6 we would have bought one. I could buy one tomorrow if I wanted (so could fast_dude)
Shouldn't you be out collecting parts for your top mounted BT build?

if you're gonna get into heavy mods, gen1, otherwise gen2
Michael Knight says K.I.T.T. is better hands down.
+ you get to wear a leather jacket while driving at all times without looking stupid

Go with either gen, they both have the same badge on it which means its a great car, good luck with the decision!

Neither... they are both shat
Based on an automag review, the Gen2 was marginally faster in the slalom with an auto journalist driving it.
Take the gen1 stock vs. gen 2 stock to a track like Mosport and put them in the hands of a driver who can push them to their limits and the gen1 will eat a gen2. Partly for the reasons you used to say the gen2 is a better car, i.e. gearing changes and softer suspension set-up. The gen1 is geared more towards a track set-up stock and the gen2 is a much nicer place to be for everyday driving. The gen2 is a more refined car in terms of feel.
They are both very good cars and the best performance FWD package/choice on the market IMO.

Actually the biggest reason the gen2's are faster in the slalom is because of the better/wider tires in stock trim. I highly doubt in the hands of a great driver than the gen1 would really "eat" a gen2. I also never said the gen2 was softer (nor can I really confirm whether it is or not) just that it has revised suspension.
My gen 1 eats every speed in the gta. Nom nom nom.
