volkswagen jetta 1993 - what a piece of crap , would never in my life drive another jetta. Electrical problems everywhere
Honda civic - what a nice car to drive, so reliable , good on gas , parts are cheap. Only downside is interior has not options , exterior is only decent
mazda 3- amazing looking car inside and outside. good power for a 4 cylinder.Bad on gas , parts are expensive.

98 civic EX(traded in for downpayment) rents car, second driver
06 Ml350(lease finished returned) horrible car, rents car ,second driver
08 sport GS (first car that I own for my self)
1978 Ford Fairmont BEST Car at the time
1986 Ford Tempo. Nice car but had stupid things go wrong
1989 Dodge Shadow Nice car but lousy service and had stupid things go wrong
1989 Ford Escort LX Tough little car but died a sad death (was rearended)
1991 Honda Accord EX-R Coupe. BEST CAR I ever had. Still ran at 413,000 km when I stupidly sold it in March of 2007
1995 Honda Civic EX Another wonderful car that stupidly was sold in May of 2007
2007 Mazda 3 GS Look at comment 2 and 3 above and you can see how I feel about this one

1986 Chevy S-10 pickup. The 'Tahoe' version. Blue/silver two tone long box. Redneck luxury.
1988 Chevy Beretta GT. Typical high school kid ricemobile. Had the loudest exhaust at my school. I actually drag raced the beast. 17.6s 1/4 mile hellzyeah. :chuckle
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/th_30464_2_full.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/30464_2_full.jpg)
1986 Honda CRX DX. The most awesome free piece of s*** ever. It was held together with bondo and expanding foam, and it still got compliments everywhere. Stupid thing would not die, so when the rear suspension fell off, I drove it to the junkyard.
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/th_IMG_0710.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/IMG_0710.jpg)
1992 Mazda Protege DX. The worst $3000 piece of s*** ever. It never ran or drove right. I drove it for a year without 5th gear, it ate CV joints, coolant, oil, brake fluid, and just about everything else. But you bet your ass it had a killer stereo. After driving it with no brakes for a month, I finally got rid of it. And yes, that is duct tape.
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/th_DSCF0005a.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/DSCF0005a.jpg)
1994 Chevy Beretta Z26. 1 of 796 with the Quad 4 engine. A really fast and fun car, and got 34mpg at the same time. Ran it into a tree in the winter. Was taken to Wisconsin and restored by the new owner. I really miss it. :(
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/th_IMG_2609a.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/IMG_2609a.jpg)
2002 Chevy Cavalier Z24. It looked good, had working A/C, and got me everywhere I wanted to go. But that was about it. To this day, I still wonder why I bought one with an automatic trans. I got rid of it while it was still worth more than two pennies.
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/th_IMG_7571.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/rmwatt/IMG_7571.jpg)
2008 Mazda 3 Sport GT. My first new car, complete with the yuppie interior package. Hauls my bicycles around, and is the most shiny car I've owned. Love it. :hawt

So that's it. 7 cars in 11 years. Sorry for the stories but I just thought I'd have some fun :)

First "car" was a 1991 Dodge Caravan that my parents gave me.
My first real car was my 1994 Ford Escort LX I bought in 2002. That thing was awesome, had everything including sunroof and it was 5-speed. I was 16 and it rocked, A/C, I even added power locks. Thing was awesome.
Then came my first brand new car in 2004 when I was 18 which was my Protege5 ES. Best car I probably ever had besides the Speed3. It had leather and everything.
Then the Cobalt SS/SC in September 2006. Biggest pile of garbage.
Next on the list in December 2007 was the 2006 Explorer Eddie Bauer Limited.
Got rid of that and grabbed my Speed3 in March 2008.
Bout' does it for me..

Easy, feel free to swap any other car for the A4...
Step 1 - move to small town and be only one of two A4's in area
Step 2 - wave frequently at other Audi driver (especially since she's a cute female)
Step 3 - realize that the other A4 lives across the street from your A4
Step 4 - find out that YOUR parents have been friends with HER parents for years - find out the car is manual tranny
Step 5 - procrastinate during final exams, look up her email and send her a note to say hi, suggest our lonely Audi's should meet sometime
Step 6 - take her out to dinner, don't forget to let her drive your car on way home

1992 Toyota Tercel. Bullet proof. Never a worry with it although my mechanic said it was rusting pretty badly underneath.
I was sad to see it go to the scrapyard, but my Mazda3 GT Sport is a whole lot more fun. We'll see about the reliability.
I'm not worried about the difference in fuel economy because I take my bike everywhere in the 'burbs and leave the car for longer trips along the highways.

Learned to drive in a 1996 Grand Am GT, then a 1998 GMC AWD Safari (lots of fun in the snow), and a 2000 Grand Prix GT fully loaded (leather, HUD, remote start), this was my dads, I almost bought it, didn't make enough $ at the time)
After driving the rents vehicles for the first 2 years, I finally bought my own for transportation to and from college.
1994 Ford Escort Wagon - $700 tank! I put this in the ditch about 5 times due to snow/ice and it never let me down. Drove it for 2 years, and put a big box in the back. 5 cubic foot ported box, reinforced with steel rods. I could lift the wipers off the front window without trying :)

I was DD for a group of friends and fell asleep at the wheel after dropping them all off thank god! I crossed Highway 2 @ Boes Rd between Brighton / Trenton(for those in Quinte Area), 4 mailboxes, 2 driveways and put the car on its roof in a ditch..
Next was a 1993 MX-3 RS 5spd, little ricer go cart. Loud Weapon-R exhaust, and my 15 Solobaric, people heard me coming from a long way away.

Got rid of this due to many repairs needed at once. I still miss this car a little, would have liked a BPT swap at some point.

1. I learned to drive on a 65 Dodge short box half ton truck with an automatic stick shift sticking straight out of the center dash, still have this truck with only 68,000 original miles.
2. my first car I actually bought was a 63 Olds Dynamic 88 Holiday, even had factory air and tons of chrome
3. 1979 white Nova Rally Sport, last of the Nova's
4. 1980 Ford Cougar with digital dash and bean bag seats, what a lemon.
5. 1984 Honda Prelude, great car until marriage and kids
6. 1988 Honda Accord, another great car used along with my wife's 86 Dodge Colt, also a pretty decent car for a box
7. 1992 Honda Civic which is still going strong at 284000 kl. and hardly even a worn out part. Timing belts every 100,000, break pads at 170,000 and a few boots, even has the original muffler.
8. 1992 GMC Safari, average van traded with 284,000 on a
9. 2002 Pontiac Montana which has been a much better vehicle than expected, with 3 kids a van just fits the bill. North American cars may be alright but you ca expect to be constantly replacing parts?? Also service is not as good.
10. 2009 Mazda 3 GS Sedan. If it is half as good as my Honda's I will be happy
I am very pleased with the Mazda so far, have already put on 8,500 kl in less than 2 months as everyone in the family fights to get it, I end up the only one using the old Civic these days.

Got it in '03, had a tonne of problems with it during my time of owning it. There were so many things wrong with it when I got my 3, I barely got any money for it (couple hundred bucks). That car was the exact reason that I decided to spend the money on a 3, instead of settling for a Focus or a G5.
Best decision of my life. Couldn't be happier with my car.

2001 VW Jetta TDI. Fully loaded, Monsoon sound system, sunroof, leather, it was awesome. Especially for an 18 year old kid. My dad sold it because of reliability fears (in fact, the car never really showed any signs of trouble in the department) and because he figured I didn't need a car in university...6 months later I have the 3. I still regret getting rid of it, but I'm sure the 3 will more than replace it in time.

Love the GN's dude. Always wanted an 87 GNX. How was it to drive, I've never gotten a chance.
Yah, I still love the looks of the GN and you still see one every now and again. I preferred the 87's too.
The GN was a beast to drive, at least in a straight line. The closest thing to sheer grunt and torque to the MS3 that I have ever driven. However, it was not a great handling car at all. Total P.O.S. in this regard and the amount of body roll was way too much in a car with this much power. The back end would fly out really easy if you weren't careful when taking turns and punching it just a little. Basically, it was an awesome drag style car that looked seriously mean with dark tints being all black and murdered-out. So not a track car though. I could run circles around it in the MS3.
I love power, but I am a handling guy first and foremost. No point having gobs of power that can't be utilized with any effectiveness when the wheel is turned. Ever day I drive the MS3, I applaud the Mazda engineers for how they managed to put all this power and handling in a FWD car and how they created such a perfect package. It puts a smile on my face every single day...
My Dad had some pretty awesome American muscle cars when I was young. He had a limited edition Camaro (which he hated and traded in soon after buying) and then bought a green Mach2 Mustang. I believe it was a fastback too, but I was about 5 years old, so don't quote me on this as I don't know enough about Mustangs to know for sure. Maybe Kevcool would know. He had another Mustang too afterwards, but I think just a regular GT with the 5.0L. My DAD is a Ford guy...much to my chagrin...

My first and only other car I've owned was a 1994 Jetta GL and lemme tell you...it was a fun little car but it wasn't in the greatest condition...hence the user name lol... So I sold her privately (the dealer offered me 900 for a trade in) and put the money towards my 3...
Let's just say it was an excellent trade up to my 3 :)

Looks like you hit the MAzda line in 1987 with your RX7. Then experienced a few other cars inbetween (civic SiR, VW GTI golf, shitbox) and went back to MAzda again and never looked back!
That sure says something for brand quality!!! :chuckle

Yup, I've always had an affinity for Mazda's. They have always been super reliable for me with regular maintenance and fun to drive, great handling cars for the money. I was thrilled to see them start going back to their roots around 1998-1999. They kind of lost their way through a good part of the 80's and early 90's, with the exception of the RX7 and Miata line-up, of course.
Mazda has a pretty long lineage in racing circles and they really don't promote it anywhere near enough.

Acura EL, very reliable, very boring over the years. No power, no fun, high revving engine with no-go
Golf GL, 4th gen. suprisingly good torque from base engine, horrible fit and finish, nightmare reliability, rattle box, starting falling apart at the 40k mark. Say no to VW or lease for 2 years. Finance if you hate money.
Mazda 3 GT Sport. Really good engine, a lot of fun. Lots of features. Tiptronic is refreshing. Good fit and finish, no problems aside common gas cap issue, brakes squeal when back out of garage if cold or wet, goes away quickly after.

1988 Mazda6 - excellent car - drove the crap out of it for 2 year with little to no issues
1988 s10 4x4 - pretty much stock - tires & bumpers
1984 s10 4x4 - SBC - Solid axle swap 36" TSL's (I could go on forever - well lets just say the body & bits of the frame were stock and over $35k invested)
1988 s10 2wd - 4cylinder - beater - did wicked burnouts :)
1991 s10 2wd - winter beater - again did wicked burnouts :)
1984 s10 4x4 - stock - daily driver - wrecked it about 3 months after getting it
1989 s10 4x4 - body lift 31" M/T's - catback - bumpers
1979 Ford Crown Vic - couch on wheels - got it for free
1989 Civic Si - ZC swap - CAI - header/catback - Suspension - kept blowing it up - sold it
1994 Buick Regal - another couch on wheels - parents old car - was one of my favorite daily drivers
2000 GTP - Headers/exhaust - Ported LIM/Blower/Throttle body - rockers & springs - PRJ fuel rails - intercooled - CAI - Strut bars - 2.9" pulley - Car was really fun till the convertor started having a shit - car was most fun with a 3.4" pulley & no intercooler/ported LIM & blower (this was just too much power for a fwd car).
2004 Mazda3 Sport - love this car, was convinced to trade the GTP in for this by a coworker - I've only spent about $2500 in goodies
Then I have my race cars that I've owned - but that's a whole other list

1. 1998 Honda Accord DX - It had 390,000 km on the odometer. It would have easily gone to 500,000 km or more if I repaired it after the engine mount broke; but I decided to replace it instead because there were heavy incentives for buying a new car at that time.

Learned to drive in my parents' 1997 Toyota Rav 4 and a 1993(?) Volvo 740 Wagon
The wagon was replaced with a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo, which I spent much time in :)
First car: 1986 Volvo 240, which died in 2 weeks due to electrical cancer
Second car: 1989 Volvo 740 which eventually became too expensive to fix. But damn that was such an awesome car.
Here she is trolling a classic auto show:

Yah I took that pic, but the background was Photochopped. The car was already too old (that pic was taken 5 years ago). It had over 320,000 kms before the engine died. I then replaced its engine but at that time, my love for her had already dwindled. It was time for a new car. She now belongs to someone else that also had a love for Talons, so I don't feel too bad. I would have liked to have kept her, but insurance plus no room wouldn't allow me.

Aww to bad. But it's good hear that another Talon lover got the car...Better than a scrap yard!
Insurance enough is a lot for anyone...Just a huge money burner for sure.

Just Curious about what cars you guys had before buying a Mazda
I've owned
1990 Honda Accord (Automatic)
1999 Mazda Protege (Manual) (Worst and best car I've owned) Did 70000 km in one year with that car and was still going , had a Christmas tree in my dash (check engine , battery light , air bag light was on all the time , Imagine when I had my High Beams , was running low on gas and had no more windshield washer what It was looking like!!!! Replaced 4 shocks , alternator , link-kits , oil pan , tie-rods , ball-joints , low compression in one cylinder , car was throwing fresh oil from exhaust , rust everywhere ... but the car was also running fine , I think it was mostly because the owner before me did no maintenance on his car .
1997 Sunfire (Manual) What can I say , I bought this temporarly , drove it for a few months and sold it , It was a damn ugly car but I was surprised that it was still going strong even after all the things I did to it !!
1995 4Runner SR5 (Manual) Still own it , It's my beater and winter storm vehicule , that truck the most reliable vehicule I've owned and it is 17 years old!!! I've got more than 250 000 km on it , I don't know how long it has to go but I'l keep it till it dies!
what about you guys?

Nice thread :)
The last and only other car I've had was an '06 Matrix XR that I inherited from my late grandfather back in 2009. He maintained the crap out of it, so the least I could do was keep up his hard work. After about a year I felt like it was time for a change and I needed to put the past behind me so I sold it and bought my 3 in Feb '11 :)

91 Mazda 626, silver, auto my first car my speedo didnt for most of the time I had the car then I finally got it fixed and it died :(
Then I bought a 95 Mazda Precidia Red 5sp (4 banger i think it was a 1.6 liter lol) tinted it and had transmission issues but all fixed then traded it in for the MSP.
My 2003.5 MazdaSpeed Protege Titanium silver (best color IMO) (MSP) Huge upgrade for me at the time 2nd car I was proud of owning after my 626 lol.... lots of fun to drive ton of mods then just recently sold it to my bro.
Bought my 05 Mazda 3 GT Red and everything is good so far I hope in the future to get a MazdaSpeed 3
Mazda Power here!!!

1998 VW Golf Wolfsburg
2010 Mazda3 sport GX

The golf was terrible. As many may guess, nothing but electrical problems.
The 2010 GX gave me zero problems and I loved it more each day. This led me to the speed3 :D
