CRIPPLE FIGHT!!!!! :bana :chuckle

Well that's the best I've gotten so far off a tank of gas from when the gas pump leaver stops till I filled up again. Not much traffic either, just a bit of stop and go on Hwy 7. I drive a 2.0.
When the needle was at half I had already gotten 407km.
majic, What's useful to one may not be for another.
Ken,
fine.. maybe your post was useful to some BUT it could have packed MUCH more value if you added that 738km did not occur when the light came on but when you filled up as well as how MANY liters you filled up with.. that would be enough to get a mpg or l/100km reading which is MUCH more accurate than saying i get 700 to a tank or 400 at half way mark...by the looks of it u won't hear from me for much longer anyway.. so cheers an wicked mileage assuming you filled around 50L ;)
Hey when i've got my 04 M3 last month it was compleatly stock and the milage i've got was 580km when the light went up. Now I have Magnaflow axcle back and i dont know how many km i can get on a tank now...
I'm pretty satisfied with my baby :) Drove to Montreal with just a little over 3/4 of a tank at a constant speed of 120.
I do 95% city and get 12 L/100 avg Not exactly as the standard but stop and go traffic kills the economy..
Anyone knows how much can i keep going after the Gas light is on?? I am suspecting there are still like 10-12 L in the tank when the light comes up. but then my "trip computer" is saying i only get like 50km left!!
The trip computer is saying avg is 10.0/100Km but from my calcuation it is like 9.5-9.8 and i m like 50/50 Hwy/city
Long story short (long road trip but funny/stressful story that I won't bother typing here)...gas light came on at 33km (maybe it was 30km) left in the tank. I measured and at exactly 33km the trip computer said 0km left (just like it said it would). I drove an extra 22km (AFTER it said 0km left) before I made it to a gas station. When I filled up the car it took just over 52L of gas.
This was about 60/40 (Hwy/City) and the trip compter said avg 9.8/100km
Everyone remember to check your tire pressures now that it's colder.
i see that this site has not been mentioned in this thread:
http://www.torontogasprices.com/
they have a fuel logging feature that automatically calculates L/100KM and work even when you don't fill up to the top!
http://www.torontogasprices.com/Logb...e_Records.aspx
people should stop using KM/Tank because it's inaccurate
In my speed I get about 7.5-8L per 100km highway and when driving 100% city to work and back I get anywhere from 9.8-11L per 100km. It isn't hard to get good fuel mileage, just lay off the gas pedal. Like when I'm on the highway I set my cruise control to 110kmh for the whole trip. Also, the use of premium gas will help increase fuel mileage, but only enough to be cost affective in a car that requires it anyway.
I haven't had to fill up since November :)

wrong thread...
Just averaged 8.8L / 100KM on my last tank. Mixed driving city and highway, trick was to keep the revs under 3000rpm. Not easy, especially on the highway, I've never gone that slow on the 401 (100km/h - 110km/h)
My last fill, about 60% city with a drive to Innisfil and back (120kph average)...normal driving. Did 401 km, used 32.504 litres which calculates to 8.1/100km or 34.7 mpg......not bad for January.

not bad at all...
how accurate is the trip computer on showing your current consumption L/100km? I don't know if i'm just seeing things but when I accelerate from a complete standstill, it goes up to something like 60L/100km! is this for real? or maybe it just shows how much gas is being wasted on stop and go traffic? mind you, I'm not even flooring it or getting my rpm anywhere near the red line. shifts at 3K rpm. mine's AT btw.
I'm not sure if you were asking me but I would'nt know I don't have the trip computer in the '05.:complain
Maybe someone with the unit and knows it well can help you.But I would think it will be fairly accurate but also you would have to set it up for average consumption....I would think....Anyways best way in my books is the old fashion way; Fill your tank to click off, zero your trip meter, when you refill write down your kms driven and litres used and calculate.Do this several times to get a more accurate average.

From what I've been able to gather it's reasonably accurate. When you accelerate the indicator tells you the fuel economy if you don't change your driving pattern. (ie. keep accelerating until you reach your destination) Obviously, when you hit the gas peddle and accelerate you will notice your fuel economy goes down. When you stabilize your speed your fuel economy will level off because it doesn't require as much fuel to keep the momentum of the gar going forward.
Now keep in mind if you drive 130 km/hr on the highway your fuel economy is going to be crap because you're going too fast. I've found on the highway that my car gets the best fuel economy between 110 and 120 km/hr.
I get 29 mpg via two calculators based off your 8.1L/100km.
Here's one
that's actually a question for anybody who wants to answer it :) but thanks for answering _3 lol
thanks guys for your inputs... for me, I still do it the traditional way... and no i don't accelerate all the way to my destination, once i'm on my desired speed, I ease off the gas already. by then the computer says i'm only consuming this much fuel.. sometimes as low as 1.5L/100km. makes sense when you ave it all up. it just bothered me when I saw "60L/100km" on my dash. thanks again:)
Here we go again! It is not misleading and it is not a scam used by automakers.....didn't we go thru this before? The fact of the matter is in Canada we have always used and followed the British measurement system not the U.S's....pick-up the Canadian Vehicle Fuel consumption guide and you'll see that I'm right.....and to clear things up the manufacturers are only following Canadian law.The only way to get mislead is if you don't realize the U.S gallon is smaller than the Canadian gallon. But nevertheless the Litres/per 100km will never change.

.
It's misleading because the only meaningful comparison for MPG figures is with US figures. The metric measurement is L/100km. If you're going to provide a figure for MPG, the only value is because we have so much available US literature.
We don't measure distance in miles and nobody buys fuel in British gallons, so why is this figure used at all? Because it makes the numbers look good. :)
:pop (sides with WW)
You seem to be forgetting a whole demographic here, What about the fact that they are still selling millions of vehicles to older Canadian consumer's whom for many many years used the MPG (Imperial Measure) method, which they are comfortable with and is undoubtably why it is still used!!...Anyways all you have to do if your comparing the Canadian spec with the US spec is minus 20% from the Canadian spec and you'll end up with the U.S spec.If you have a problem with the whole thing, than maybe you should write the Canadian Government because they are the ones who control how the info is stated, not the manufacturers.I'm just stating the way it is, I don't make the rules.

Wow huge thread. Just figured I'd throw my 2 cents:
My '07 GT has 20,400km on it and these have been my observations:
1) During summer I get approximately 250km/half tank (I always fill at half).
2) Once this mega winter kicked in it dropped to about 240km (probably due to the heater being on at max fan most of the time).
3) I always use 87 octane gas. 98% of the time it is ESSO gas as it seems that here is always an ESSO gas station around. On two occasions I filled using premium 91 octane fuel because the local ESSO was out of regular and was selling premium gas for "regular" price. Both these occasions were during late summer (late aug, early sept). In both occasions I found the the half tank lasted me 260km. Now I am no expert nor do I endorse spending an extra 10-15 cents on premium gas i just through that was an interesting note worth sharing.
4) Having said all of the above I must say one of my biggest pet peeves with the 3 is the fuel economy. A good friend of mine with similar driving style to my own purchased an 07 Nissan Altima 2.5s (brand new) around the same time I got my 3. We both drive about 60 km per day as well. The Altima has a 2.4L, 175HP engine and his car only uses 9.5L/100 (as per the on board computer in his car). The Mazda 3 fuel consumption gauge reads 10.9L/100km on mine. Obviously I am very disappointed than a bigger engine with more power manages way better fuel economy than the 3.
5) I still love my 3 regardless!
Cheers,
FuzzyT.
Seems like everyone feels different brand of gas is better/worst than others. I actually have a friend whose mechanic seriously recommended against Shell, saying ESSO was the better quality gas -- I wonder, don't all these companies receive the fuel from the same refinery or does each company "post process" the fuel further once they receive it?
-FuzzyT.
I think alot of times its car specific. My previous vehicle loved Sunoco gas, it would always run smoother with more power and get better mileage. With my Mazda I find it runs much better with Shell gas as compared to Sunoco, Esso, or Petro.(I have 67k on her now and never had a problem with her, engine wise), But I have always found Esso fuel to be the worst of the bunch, and I know from doing alot of reading that Esso fuel is one of the dirtiest fuels out there and that Shell is one of the cleanest as it pertains to carbon build-up in your engine.(Not enviromental emmisions)

I don't find the gauge too accurate. I always do my own calculations. That being said, I can get 300km/h at 1/2 tank. Give or take 20 km/h depending on conditions. During the colder weeks where I have to warm up the car, I get 280 km at 1/2 tank.
I get 9L/100KM (somewhere in the 9 range).
my gas has dropped significantly over this winter....i usually get 475-500kms before the reserve light comes on....now the reserve light comes on 430-450...
The computer's reading for mileage is a load of hogwash. Mine's always read at least 1L more than my own calculated results.
Same here for the drop over the winter.
Remember that the cold itself has an impact. Until your O2 sensors heat up and start making accurate readings, the car runs rich in open loop mode so the mileage sucks. If you make mostly small trips so the car mostly runs cold, your mileage will suffer dramatically.
Yeah no kidding WW. I barely get 250km to the 1/2 tank now that its winter. That's what you get for putting around a town that only takes 15min to get around. I get between 18-22MPG and on my last trip to Jay Peak I got 29MPG.
The MZ3 2.3L comes out of Open loop just under 1500rpm in the mornings, but engine load is still 25-30% at stop lights. It's not until the car is fully warmed up that your right, I get the proper mileage.
Very well, I will try going Shell only for a month see if it makes any difference. Though if the wether warms up the results may be skewed. Perhaps the fairest thing would be to do it in July and August when the weather is always warm. I'll let you know how it goes ...
