Could be you feeling the engagement point?

Normal for me.
Most hydraulic clutches are devoid of all tactile response. I like that I know right where the engagement point is. I drive an 07.
since this thread seems active. just wondering what kinda of summer/street tires you ms3 boys are running. my ss and the ms3s have simular numbers so getting the torque down requires nice tires. if your tuned that would help too as ill be tuned come april.
soo far looks like ill be running 235/40/18 BFG KDW2. reasonible priced, grippy, good wet/dry traction, comfrotable ride. but apperently loud. the noise wont bother me i have a radio.
opinions?
Hankook V12s...best bang for your summer tire buck. grippy, excellent wet/dry traction, comfortable ride and quiet :)
it all depends what you want to do with the car in the summer...if you plan to track it, are you gonna get a separate set of R-compounds? The V12 may not like you after a few hard track sessions....don't know much about the KDW2 in that regard.
There are a number of MS3 owners in various states of tune and setup running the V12s.
I use 235/40r18 falken 912's. I wish I had gotten the 615's, though the 912's seem to have a longer life. People on here seem to really like the Hankook V12 tires, so next time I need a set I think that's what I'll be getting. There's no reason to get a brand like BFG or goodyear, etc. They jack their prices up because of their name. Often times with companies like Hankook or Falken you can get better tires for much less.
I'm also shopping for new sticky summers (and rims!). My top two contenders are the Hankook V12's vs Bridgestone Potenzas (RE050's or similar). Thoughts? I'm cheap so leaning towards the Hankook's :) How are they for treadwear though?
EDIT: I plan to track a 1-3 times this season but I wasn't planning on getting a separate set of R-compounds.
The stock MS3 tires are the RE050's. After maybe 6-7000 km mine were 1/2 gone. I kept having to rotate them because they wore out so fast. I sold them on my stock MS3 rims. I will never have those tires again and I really hope you don't either. They didn't even grip that much. Not compared to my 235/40 Falken 912's anyway, and the Falkens last a hell of a lot longer.
+1 on the V12's. Best all-round bang for the buck.
If you plan on doing some auto-cross or semi-regular tracking, then maybe consider an R compound or the Dunlop Direzza Star Specs. I wouldn't recommend the Star Specs for the street though as they are loud, ride towards the harsh side , they wear quickly and are not very good in a heavy rain. They are great in the dry though and for occasional track use.
your not the first to suggest those to me. they have good specs too much simular the the KDW2s. close to the same price too.
i dont go racing often, and if so its the 1/4mile. i went about 6 times last year on my stock bald sportcompact 2's.
mostlys i need tires that will hold the torque, which should be around 320.

if we could get a group buy through allen@simply tire for summer tires that would be cool.
r-comps is hard for me. finding a set of wide 17' rims that clear the front calipers is next to impossible with my stupid bolt pattern. not to mention i rarely if if ever autocross/road race.
Al, when I had 912's on my MS3 (they came almost new with the rims I bought from a member) they were decent enough, but I found the MS3 would overwhelm them pretty easily. They were good at putting power down in a straight line, but they just didn't have the level of grip i wanted or needed to put power down in turns. You need to be really careful on the throttle and feather it at times or the tires would simply slide. They are very good at providing you feedback when their limits are about to be exceeded though. I was running 225/40/R18's, so your tire size is wider and you would have more grip, but this isn't really a tire I would recommend on a high powered FWD car if you are going to track at all, or push the car hard where corners are involved. Don't get me wrong, I think the Falken 912 is a fantastic tire at its price point and is absolutely terrific on a regular Mazda3, but the MS3 needs more tire than the 912 can give it performance wise.
I'm in for a GB on the V12's if we arrange one.
im in for the evo v12's aswell.
nice little tire comp buy car n driver. evos place 2nd next to the dunlop star specs like zoom zoom suggested.

NOOOO!!!!...lol...the V12's will not hold up to even 1 track day...
I did 3 autox runs with them, they were in well taken cared of condition, just normal wear...then after 3 light runs (I wasn't even timed), I could see the corners or the tread blocks shredding a bit...definitely more wear than I had expected.
I *MIGHT* run them in the wet if I needed a rain tire at the track, but I'd not rely on them to last 3 hot laps in the summer...just a waste, if you do.
there's also Bailey Tire to consider if you're willing to take a road trip south. He was $200-300 cheaper than local last year.
John at Exclusive also has some good pricing.
another tire to consider, if you got the $$$ and want a dual street/track tire...Yokohama AD08. close to R-compound grip, street tire rain traction and longevity.
You are absolutely right, which is why I wished I had gotten the 615's. At the time my new rims and tires all went on my Visa, and the extra $80 for the 615's didn't seem necessary for me. I do a lot of boring straight highway driving between Montreal and Toronto so the 912's were perfectly fine for that, and has a better treadwear rating than the 615's. After a few fun runs up north I wish I had gotten the 615's and sucked up the extra $80 plus however much it would work out to for the tires to wear out much earlier.
Dont bother with RT-615's, just get the Toyo tire discount and get R888. Much better tire and long compound wear. I have heard the same thing from a few racers (some ones that ran Chump Car too).
I am planning on running R888 on the track car...oopz, let the cat outta the bag ;)
You guys should also look into the Bridgestone RE760 Sport. Better in wet/dry than the Ventus, and is asymetric, so you can rotate however you want...
Last year, they were around $740.00 installed for the 215-45-18 tires, which makes it a bargain for a Japanese tire. The added bonus of this tire is that they are sexy as hell.
Not to sound like bump on a log, but how/where are they better in wet/dry then the V12's?

Hankook Ventus Evo V12
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...12_evo_page_10
It was a good comparison, which had the V12's come out 2nd overall. The RE760 were below average in the wet, and had mediocre performance. However they were a more 'comfortable' tire.
Most if not all comparisons I have seen were pretty similar in the ratings between the two tires, as in the V12's were a good tire and awesome price point. So I am curious to see how they were rated higher.
I'm aware that the reviews show them as being mediocre in wet, but that is really not the case. A lot of those reviews were written by guys with 275-30-19 in the rear and considered them slippery, and that's because in a wide size like that, asymetric tires are slippery.
All I can give you is real world experience. I've done over 200+ Mazda 3's with 205-55-16, 205-50-17, 225-40-18, 235-40-18, and 215-45-18 Bridgestone RE760's.... and I can tell you that each and every one of those owners loved them in the wet... but the few 5 and 3 series with the wider rears, did complain about "shifty" rear ends.

found this very interesting. hankook evo v12 vs Bridgestone RE760 Sport
http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/07/h...e-tire-market/
Wouldn't asymmetric mean you could only rotate them from from to rear and only on the same side of the vehicle and only roll in one direction?
Awesome article... and that is the perfect car to test it on too !!!
Asymetric tires are mounted with "inside", "outside" labelling... so you could rotate them anyway you like. Directional tires are the ones that are stuck on one side of the vehicle..
Totally agreed that a Ventus Evo will outperform a RE760 on the track, but not as a daily driver....
It also mentions the Hankook to have a very stiff sidwall in one of those links, and I disagree, but again it could be size specific.
Ah ok.
But symmetrical directional tire could be put on any wheel provided it's always rolling in the proper direction. But I suppose that would require remounting and balancing.
just buy the tires and the shop will take car of the rest. lol.
go with allen hes got the best service and staff.
ill be going to visiting simply tire some time early march to get my summer tires installed before i get my tune done.
seems like the evo v12's are the best for me. 235/40/18 should get me the traction i need, hopefully they dont rub(doubt it tho).
im still down for a group buy...
I'm down for a group buy also.

I'm new to the forum, and the ms3 world all together. Been a high revving Honda guy since I rolled my 02 protégé5 in December 01. I like the torque, but miss the revs. My last 92 db2 made 230bhp at 9500rpm. The ms3 also weighs about twice as much as that car did, and isn't nearly as easy for me to back into parking spots(yet). But I love it.
On to my point about being new. Allen, where are you located?
Does anyone know if the rear centre Mazda badge is pronged of just double sided taped onto the trunk lid? I want to go a little sleeper and remove all my emblems, but only if it doesn't require any body work. I have a really nice legit carbon emblem the is essentially the reverse of the mazda badge(fills the voids in the emblem) but it only looks good if the badge is removed.
Yes, there are two holes in the hatch where the centre Mazda logo goes. I covered my holes with a flameboy vinyl. =)
D'oh! Guess I just have a really cool carbon fibre stick to slap somewhere else. I was thinking I'd relocate the mazdaspeed3 badge to the faux teak strip above the glove box. Hopefully that doesn't loom too tacky.
