I find the week I drive I am much more stressed than the week I am the passanger.
you guys are right.. the original intentions for the 407 were it not to be a toll highway... however the government made it a toll highway in the beginning to help offset the cost of building it.... however, when the tolls were first started, people stopped taking it... so the government... (the genius' they are) decided they would sell the hwy and everything with it.... so it was bought by a company based out of quebec... and is now a private hwy... not a government regulated hwy..... as for building another hwy n/Toronto.... it will never happen... because it ended up costing the government way too much to build the 407.... it's worth the money for the transponder....especially when you come back from niagra or hamilton... its soooooo much faster.. same with heading down there....

That's Mr. APRIL NOOB 2 U
Brief history here of the 407
The Ontario PC govt at the time sold the 407 to a consortium (where the majority stakeholder is from Spain) for $3.1 Billion US in order not to run a deficit in the budget. This was to skirt one of their own legislated Bills that stated the current government would be penalized for running a deficit in their budget statement.
Some likened this to selling your furniture to make the mortgage payment.
It was a boneheaded move yes, as the 407 rakes in a $hitload in tolls; however, since the sale, the highway has been extended, the lanes have been widened, road maintenance is far quicker than both municipal and provincially managed highways, their salters are out faster are more generous in the winter and, their customer service queue time has been drastically reduced. does it warrant the astronomical increase in tolls since the sale, no, but that's what happens when it is run by free enterprise with no competition.
The following quote from Wikipedia (note the last two sentences) (bold is added by me), if accurate, puts the above in an entirely different context:
"As part of a controversial plan to finance revenue for tax cuts, the highway was sold to a conglomerate of private companies in 1999 for $3.1 billion. The deal included an unprecedented 99-year lease agreement, unlimited control of the highway and its tolls. The government also may not build any nearby freeway which might potentially compete with 407. However, the Government maintained the ability to build a light transit system along the 407 right of way."

I wasn't calling him out, just stating wiki isn't reliable IMO, hence why I said it may be true that's all. Sorry if you took it the wrong way starwind, I'm not here to start any ish.
Not a problem at all :-)
Actually, trolling through Wikipedia can be rather entertaining at times :-)
And yes, although at times Wikipedia information is quite valid, at other times it is not -- overall, therefore, other sources are needed to confirm Wiki info.
(btw I would be a "she" :-) )

We're still paying for it - We pay for 407ETR bill collecting through the MTO - if you don't pay your bills owing to them for toll fees, it simply shows up the next time you want to renew your plates. To get your plates renewed, you have to pay the outstanding ETR fees.
So get this - a private corporation has managed to get the government to collect it's outstanding bills.
Last I checked, Revenue Canada doesn't collect Mastercards outstanding balances when they collect taxes from someone. To add to that, courts in Ontario ruled that the ETR407 corporation can collect by that means - talk about getting it from behind and someone not having the decency to give a reach around (just watched Full Metal Jacket last night... again...)
Odds are, ETR cancelled it's contracts/relations with any bill collecting company they had working for them - in other words, they reduced operating expenses which went to the owners pockets.
On another side not to the 407 - it was built with public money (our tax money).
