damn i'm so jealous! changed to synthetic oil and getting a little better mileage (also pouring gas slowly but don't know how much this affects the numbers... but before the synthetic change i was getting slightly better mileage using the slow method) so i was 10.1L avg on the trip cpu and now it is 9.5L avg... but with the hot and sticky weather coming, mileage will take a hit as i leave the A/C on full blast...
2008 GT sport 2.3L 5spd
~60% hwy
i tried once to drive at ~100km on highway 407 and the car cpu showed 6.7L consumption which was awesome but i couldn't keep it up as everyone was passing and gave me the look ... yes, ashamedly, i am a follower... so i sped up to 120km again...![]()

Well I guess the warmer weather is helping, here's my last numbers;
Previous tank; 492km driven, 40.01 liters used, city/hwy%: 80/20 works out to 8.15L/100km or 34.51 mpg (Imp), 28.92 mpg (US).
Recent tank; 360km driven, 27.15 liters used, city/hwy% 60/40 works out to 7.54L/100km or 37.21 mpg (Imp), 30.98 mpg (US).
Not bad

Man - reading all these numbers is so depressing!
I just paid another $570 at Mazda this week to have MORE parts replaced which were said to been affecting my fuel economy as well. My computer was reset as well.
No change at all. I barely had 200km by the 1/2 tank mark and it's always downhill from there.

Gee Heather it looks like you need to dump your car, its nickle and diming you to death. Just did a 90% highway drive with A/C on about 50% of the time, Kept reeves at 3000 and ended up with 36MPG I normal get about 30 to 32 MPG with about 40% highway.
2005 GT 2.3 Auto
last time I filled up I average @ 8.2 L (80% highway) driving@ 100 - 120 kph. Before this last fill up, I avg. @ 9.1 L same driving speed and 32 psi @ front and rear. Just before my last fill up I increased my front tire inflation to34 psi and achieved an 8.2 L avg.
I record my numbers by:
- resetting the Trip A counter every fill up.
- on my next fill up I record my Kms. travelled and the gas (L) put in.
Every time I fill up is always a full tank to get accurate averages (I think).
I also notice that I get better avg. in the winter. Why? I inflate my winters @ 36 psi. (32 + 4) as recommended. I've been recording my numbers siince Jan 2005, got the car the last week of Nov. 2004.
I have an 05 gt auto
Can someone (w/ newer model) do a comparison by getting your numbers through the Trip computer and at the same time getting them manually like I do. I wonder how much is the difference and w/c is the accurate one?
The trip computer on mine usually gives an average about 0.6-1.0L/100km higher than actual. I believe it calculates the average over time rather than distance.Originally Posted by Rene_1
As for mileage, if I was getting under 30mpg (over 7.8l/100km) I would seriously shoot myself in the foot. My last fillup was 32.2L over 467km, which is 6.9L/100km or 34mpg, and I am still not impressed. I had an old '94 Beretta Z26 with the high strung 2.3L Quad 4 engine and was able to squeeze 36mpg (6.5l/100km) out of it easily. However, I have not had the first oil change done yet. The trip computer gave an average of 7.7l/100km.
My drive to work is mainly rural roads.

I finally sat down and crunched some number of gas receipts I had sitting around that I used to keep meticulous track of.
last summer I was averaging 13.6L/100km. Then I got a lot of work done on the car under warranty due to my problematic fuel economy. I was then averaging 10.0-10.7L/100km.
Earlier this year (in the winter) I was averaging 9.8L/100km and that has continued around that since then. Until I had the work done in my car a couple weeks ago. I've run through 2.5 tanks since then and I'm now back to averaging 12L/100km. I spent more than $550 on parts that were said to help my fuel economy and they have made it worse now. And no - I'm not running with the windows down, or the A/C on and my tires are properly inflated, etc.
Is there any recourse towards to the dealer for this? The service dept insisted that this specific part had to be put in and that it was hurting my mileage because of it. I don't want to think I spent a ton of money on something that is now costing me more in gas (especially since gas only gets more expensive weekly).
Would writing a letter to Mazda Canada do any good at all?

I doubt writing Mazda will get any serious response, they will probably just tell you to go to your dealer....But it couldn't hurt to try!!
Have you mentioned to the last dealer who installed all those parts that your fuel consumption has gotten worse? ...they should be willing to help try to improve it after all that work!
Couple of questions for you; What percentage of your driving is city on average? and have you ever switched to Synthetic oil?
...and a request; Can you post a copy of your work order detailing what parts they changed and/or any diagnosis they performed? ...It would help to know the details!

Well after all my crappy dealer experiences, I think I could at least write a pretty good letter
I haven't mentioned it to the dealer yet because they will make me take it in and I have been working non-stop for 2 weeks now (I have 6 weddings to photograph in the next week and a half too). I just simply don't have time to take my car in and let it sit all day since they take FOREVER to get to anything. Knowing them, they'll charge me to diagnose something else again.
Percentage of city/hwy from Sept - April (while I was in school) was 90hwy/10city...from April to June it was about 75hwy/25city and now its about 50/50.
I don't have a scanner to copy the work order, but when I dig it up I will check and post details. I've got too much paperwork on my desk right now to find it.

When I do 50% hwy/ 50% city(markham) my trip computer I average 26.2MPG.
on my work commute, 70% hwy and 30% city my trip computer says 30.6MPG and I do stomp on it sometimes smoking those cars that weave in & out of traffic/likes to tailgate.
*** I reset my fuel computer every fillup, it seems to be pretty accurate. I usually get about 300km when I hit the half mark on gas gauge.

Latest numbers; 500.4 kms driven used 43.868 litres, roughly 80/20~city/hwy....works out to 8.76l/100km or 32.16 mpg (Imp) or 26.78 (US)...not too shabby for mostly city.....gotta learn to keep the revs down though, shifting at 3k

latest numbers: 48 L/566 km = 8.486 L/100km (50/50).
05 auto gt

After my fill up last night..an entire tank of highway driving doing no more than 110km/hour, I got a whopping 490km off the tank (wtf? surely that has to be better?)
So yeah....that was about 9L/100km of all highway driving. Pathetic if you ask me. My current tank is all highway too and it's worse than the last one.

That would be correct....give or take. I don't have the receipt in front of me at the moment. I've run on with the empty light on for a long time before and still never had to fill more than 47L in my car.
I put brand new tires on in March and they were checked at my last oil change a couple weeks ago and were said to be ok (but I haven't checked them personally so I don't know the numbers).

latest got 724km at 51L = 7.5l/100km

just did a road trip to detroit.
got about 300km per 1/2 tank
didn't keep track of full tank milage
2005 Mazda 3 Sport, ......................

When I had my MZ3 I was actually defending the fuel economy as I got what I believed to be fairly good mileage. Now that I've owned my TSX for as long as I have, I am getting considerably better mileage out of it than the MZ3. Keeping in mind that I now fill up with premium, I believe I'm still coming out ahead. Doing 75% highway I can easily get 7.8L/100km, and doing 50/50 (which is typical for me now) I get 8.3L/100km regularly. I also find myself driving the TSX harder than I did the MZ3. So yeah, let's hope Mazda addresses the issue when they introduce the new model with new engines.
