Haha yah it's pretty disappointing sometimes. I used to drive a 2.0L Mazda 3 and it was much better on gas. I guess there's a trade-off. Power or fuel economy, but when driving local and in traffic all the time, it seems like power is useless anyway!

But is the 20HP worth the 5L/100km penalty?

huh? I get around 10L/100KM for my 2.3 in local traffic, so you are saying the 2.0 gets 5.0L/100KM?

im pretty happy with what im getting, especially with the way i drive

i remember on my 2003 protege5 i used to get such bad numbers, the most i ever got on that was 500km a tank lol, nothing more.

The new i-stop feature should help with the city milage - assuming it will ever come to Canada.

I brought this across to my parents and family members and first response was "you drive too fast, that's why it eats up your gas". I can't seem to convince them.

Say it gets 7. So $3 every 100km. I guess it's nice when accelerating from a red light, but in my case it wouldn't be $25/week nice. (I drive too much)

EDIT - I'm at about 650km on this tank, and still have to make it home . Good thing I'm getting more comfortable with the light turning on and no longer freak out that I'm about to run out of gas (there's still about 10L left in the tank at that time)

How can you tell when your car is "broken in". What is the average kms to break in?

I have a total of 1500km so far. Only got 320 on a 3/4 tank. I will calc. my mileage now that i actually have a full tank

my 2011 gs sport 2.5L mazda 3 gave me 499km for 44L gas 87 octane. that's around 8.8L/100km 100% city driving and i think that's crap. Then again i do drive economically. on my second tank so far at 750km total on the car 1/2 tank left this is hwy driving and city.

What do you expect? You have the 2.5L and your car is brand new. If you want better fuel economy you should have acquired the 2.0L. Search the forum and you will find other complaining about poor mileage on the 2.5L as well. Get used to it.

I tend not to look at the trip computer, it seems to be inaccurate sometimes. I look at the gas needle and odometer instead, or I do a calculation when I fill the tank up. If I'm doing very good on fuel economy, then I should be able to estimate that I'll get 600km out of the whole tank (ex. if the needle is at the middle, then the odometer should be about 300km). If I'm driving like I don't care about fuel economy - which is true more often than not - then I'll have a situation where the needle sits a bit below the 2/3 mark and the odometer reads 165km.

The difference in gas cost between my 'good' driving style and my 'bad' driving style is about 3L... let's say 5L for the whole tank, which is about $5, which is less than what people pay for a friggin venti caramel tazo chai macchiato with organic soy milk no water. In other words, if I feel like driving for good fuel economy, then I'll do it to see if I can do it. If I want to drive to have fun, then I'll drive to have fun.

    I love the Fuelly website!

I too have noticed the gas mileage isn't the best..but what were we to expect? The EPA is like what, 25 average hwy/city? You cannot expect it to get more if it wasn't exactly built/designed for it! I am happy with my mileage, considering I was driving a poorly running ford probe gt prior to this, and that thing wasn't economical at all!

See my MPG in my sig, not too bad for about 50/50 hwy/city.

oops, so I guess the EPA average is 28mpg, so I am off by about 0.2 mpg.

i drive downtown toronto, i take the 401 everyday on stop and go traffic at 830am. and i avg 24.7 miles per gallon = 9.5 l/100km. Which isnt bad considering i have a heavy foot.

Now when i am light on the pedal and use 6th gear crusing above 60kms/h i have gotten upwards of 28mpg or 8.4l/100km.

I also have the 2010 GT 2.5l With every option from factory and a 10 inch square kicker sub. So its pretty a pretty heavy car. Its not like a 90's tin can anymore. its a lot of car.

I am just happy that mine went down from 10.2 to 9.4, gradually of course. Having a 2.5 liter is fun when you are driving, not as much when you are filling the tank. But hey, I chose to drive this......so I have suck it up.
