Thumbs up My Mazda gas mileage doesn't look good

Hi guys, new comer here. Got my Mazda 3 2010 GX sport with Hatchback end of last year. Driving for a couple of months now, I realized that it actually eats much more gas than expected. I am sure I get it measured precisely 27.5 Liters for 200K. I rarely drive on highway but local instead.

How about your gas mileage? Is mine over the everage which I do belive.

    Thanks all for your comments.

So i'd say 80% city driving? Alright... well your tank is approx 55L... and at 27.5L you got 200kms, thus for a full tank, expecting around 400-450kms in CITY seems about within most the mazda 3 fuel economy threads going... I get around 400-450km in 80/20 city/highway driving.

It also depends on how you drive your vehicle... if you accelerate quickly, brake hard, if you let the car warm up before u drive it w/ defroster... lots of little factors..

I wouldn't be too worried, other members will probably comment as well

27.5 Liters for 200km works out to 13.75l/100km which isnt very good. Have you tried checking your tire pressure?

    You are doing mostly city
If you have a standard that could be another reason as the auto is more fuel efficient
its winter time they burn more anyways
If you are so worked up about fuel mileage go buy yourself a smart car or a prius. I am sorry to sound so rude but I have had it with the numerous amounts of people complaining about gas mileage. I may have complained about it a while back but guess what, I bought the car to drive because I liked it. My last tank i filled was 50L at 420km which works out to about 11.9L/100km. Mind you i am mainly on the highway

the gx sport is 45L. besides what everyone else recommended, make sure your tire pressure is set according to the respective temperature and type of tire. for example, winter tires are very soft and need extra psi to compensate.

IIRC 2010 GX is 55, GS is 60

I'm really disappointed with my fuel consumption.

This was my first fill-up since getting the car from the dealer. I assume the dealer had the correct tire pressure, and the fuel gauge was at full when I got the car. I have my summer tires on and never had to drive in snow. I coast in gear, do tortoise starts, never used A/C or spent time warming the car. It was nearly all city driving.

So, my first fill-up? 54.17 L after driving a mere 404 km. That's 13.4 L/km. That's terrible. Are brand new cars particularly guzzlers? Any idea what I should check besides tire pressure?

Well, since it your first fill up from the dealer, I am assuming the car is brand new. You will need to give it some break in time and such to achieve best fuel economy. My previous ride, the 2007 Civic sedan, I had to hit about 8,000km to achieve 700-750km on highway, 100km/h speed.

My current Mazda 3, 2.0L autotragic(tm) at 120km/h on highway I got about 600km with the needle at last bar on E.

Remember, you're doing city driving, it makes a difference, at least for me, and not just Mazda 3, with the Civic too.

    Be patient

It'll get better, just let it break in. Just remember though....you've got a 2.5L. I've stopped worrying about my fuel mileage already and just enjoy driving the car.

You are right, and you reminded me about 2.5L.

    to the OP:

Wow... with a 2.5L, mostly city driving, and after first refill... you actually did pretty good for 400km tank... sometimes I get 400 city with 2.0L GX...

I have a 2010 GX 5MT and the mileage I am getting is always better than people here posting with their automagics. With 13,000km's and 100% syn oil, I just bagged 7.1L/100km, and this is with my Gislaved NF5's still on and lots of slow hwy crawling. With warmer temps and all season rubber, I should easily meet Mazda's officially reported #'s for hwy. Sure, you could use more fuel with an MT, but that's likely b/c of poor technique and lead-foot driving.

Manuals are only better if you know how to drive them to acquire the best possible gas mileage. Otherwise, you could end up with much worse.

Geez, Why do people always talk kms-per-tank? It tells you nothing, is extremely inaccurate and just plain wrong, sorry, no offence...The OP just gave all the most accurate info; kilometers driven and litres used, the size of the tank is also useless info (in this case).Anyways in his (OP) case, after calculation, it shows he's getting a piss poor 13.75 L/100km!! NO regular Mazda should be getting that poor a mileage if not driven hard, there must be something wrong.Yes, a car will burn more fuel till the engine breaks in, but never that bad.I'm going to assume since the OP is concerned with his gas mileage, he's not red-lining the thing every chance he gets and tries to drive as smooth as possible to achieve good readings.Anyways I'd suggest to the OP; Check your tire pressures, (never assume someone else did thier job correctly).Make sure your not running it in any climate control mode which will cause the air-compressor to work.Check your air filter and box for obstructions and last but not least reset your computer...My 2.3 has never got worse then 10.0/100km, even when I was breaking her in, drive mostly city and she's standard...even in winter!...and I don't have a miracle car.

Agree with Pokey... I just did the first fill up in my 2010 3Sport GT (2.5L engine, automatic) and got 8.4L/100km on a balanced mix of city/highway driving.

The real time consumption guage in the GT is really useful. This is the first car I've had with one, the last time I bought a car was 11 years ago. As I continue learning the car's preferences and the engine breaks in, I hope to see it go lower. I'm in a heated competition with my brother-in-law (2011 Civic) to prove that I've got both nimbler performance AND better fuel economy

Penzoil Platinum 5w20 (jugs were on sale for $24.88 at Walmart back in January ). I take my jug to MoT when I get the oil changed - thus mazda filter is being used.

The OP should sign up with Fuelly and start tracking his/her mileage properly.

You are going to have to drive like a grandma to beat the civic unless he drives with a lead foot. And that's going to be hard because it's a car that makes you drive faster vs the rather numb IMHO feeling of the civic. Plus like my fiancee (who drives a current gen civic) always says about cars other than the civic "what you are going at this speed? Feels slower". So the civic will win just by making it's driver thinks it's going faster cause it's more noisy, less stable and has a thrashy engine.

Yep. And you'll find people passing you left and right at stop lights if you want to drive while saving gas.

Not really. We're both conservative drivers but I have a less congested commute; he burns a lot crawling down the QEW. He's at 8.1 after several months; I'm at 8.4 first tank with room to improve. It will be close.

Agree 100% with your comments regarding both cars. Transitioning from the fast-but-heavy C280 and an all-round slow Xterra, it's really hard to keep a light foot in the M3. That's why the big digital "look how fast you're burning money right now" display is so useful.

Can't agree with you here. I'm usually not the fastest off the mark (to my own surprise though, sometimes I am), but I don't believe in holding up traffic flow to save a few drops of gasoline either. You can get good numbers without becoming a pylon.

    (tongue in cheek)

    Timmy's Large = $1.52

    $1.52 x 5 = $7.60

    7.6 / 1.28 (current gas price) = 5.9375L

Pass on your morning Timmy's and you get nearly 6L of gas to play around with for the week. Work coffee is free.

Yeah I know... someone driving a Honda Fit can have his/her coffee and pay less at the pump anyway. Did you know that coffee is one of the most expensive liquids on the planet? It gets jacked up even more when you go to Starbucks and buy a designer frappalappamochabrocachino for like $6. It's all in perspective... gasoline is a necessity and a chore to pay for/pump, a custom coffee is a treat and totally unnecessary.

Pass on your morning Timmy's and you get nearly 6L of gas to play around with for the week. Work coffee is free.
