I'm down to Toronto on occasion, and if the timing would work out I might get something powdercoated.

Im doing the same on my MS6 rims...when i get on my steelies im going to get them powdercoated bronze

Ya, I had that thought as well... can't wait for winter yet it will be one of the longest winters of my life. I hope I keep my sanity

Wait a little later in Winter say in the new year after the holiday's and Christmas to do them. Shops are hopefully not too busy and the wait for summer is not the much longer.

Until that time, stop looking at this thread and getting all worked up.

For those without the centre caps, not that hard to pop the emblems and try and colour match spray them.

Thanks for the timeframe confirmation guys. May have to work something out with the crew to drop them off one weekend and pick them up the next (or something).

Plasti-dip to see if you like the look.

If you do, strip the plasti-dip and get them powdercoated.

If you don't, you can paint overtop of the plasti-dip to try something different.

If you still don't like it, remove the paint+plastidip and revert to stock.

I had my RX8 rims done by Taj in the spring, and I plan on bringing my winters in sometime soon. Like other's have said, Metalcoaters has a pretty quick turnaround time. I believe mine was around 3 days as well.

So I decided to take the winter wheels out for a good cleaning and found that one of my rims is starting to chip/peel. One spoke has an area that is lifting off and I can stick my finger underneath the powdercoating. Same rim has an even larger crack that can also be peeled right off.

I know I only paid $200 for the whole job so I wasn't expecting perfection. But the fact that its peeling/chipping only after one Winter is rather disappointing. It's too much of an effort to have these dismounted and taken back (especially with the weather starting to get colder). If by next year the work continues to get worse, I'll most likely have them redone by Quy.






I also curbed another rim last winter. Very minor rub against a curb. As you can see, the rash itself is very small, yet the powdercoat chipped off more than it should have.

Wow that's not good. I usually clean before I store so that I have a whole season to decide what I need to do repair wise. With that last pic of the curb rash, can you tell if underneath it was sandblasted for good adhesion?

From what I was told from Taj, he said they chemically peel and don't sandblast. But this was after the rims were done. Should've asked before hand..

That might explain the large flaking as it doesn't look like it adhered to the wheel.

As for the flaking, no idea there. Was the product put on too thick or baked at too high of a temperature?

I'm not sure what went wrong. I do believe Metal Coaters warranties the work but I can't remember since these were done last year. Hopefully someone else can chime in on that part.

Email Taj, he seems like a very honest guy.

I had mine done a few weeks ago, and I noticed my clearcoat has cracks in it (on two of the 4 rims). Can't feel the crack, but you can see it in the sun on certain angles up close.

I rubbed a curb lightly on mine rim too, but it barely did anything below the clearcoat. Seems like a very durable clearcoat layer!

One thing I didn't like was that he powdercoated the hub/bore of the rim. Should have specified to mask it.

mine took over a week...he 'lost' my phone number and never thought of looking to an email to contact me.

Not disappointed, but it felt very unprofessional. He did do a great job though, and judging by everyone else's turn-around time, mine was a one-off situation. I wouldn't hesitate to get more stuff powdercoated by Taj!

One thing I did notice is the coating is not very durable, even with clear coating. The guys who mounted my tires managed to make tiny chips in 2 spots on 1 wheel. I watched them do it and they were not being overly rough with them...maybe it's because the coating was only a few days old...

Could be, but I think it is more likely the process used. The chemical dip process metal coaters uses to strip rims, does not allow the powder coat to bond as well as a sand blast does.

well - i got my winters done by Taj/Metal Coaters awhile ago and i wasnt going to pile on but it has been bothering me for a couple of months...

yes - the price was very good but i feel you definitely get what you pay for...and i will say that Taj really wasnt forthcoming (to me anyways) about the fact that they do not sandblast at Metal Coaters - they only do a chemical strip....

i havent gone through a winter yet but i am going to give it a shot and i am fully expecting to need to get these re-done by Quy in the spring

i guess the most accurate description i could give is.....good from far - far from good.....

or 'you get what you pay for' but i guess i already said that....

Thanks for the feedback. Did you add clearcoat? If not, could that be the reason why it's peeling off? The sandblasting explanation seems like a good one thu.

I've emailed Taj this morning expressing my concern. I'll keep you guys updated.
