Is that extra $80 for the clearcoat or has he changed his process to sandblasting the rims instead of a chemical strip?

I just got a quote of $200 for all four. Is there a reason this is so much cheaper than Quy's whom everyone seems to hold up as the goto guy for powdercoating?

^^ Metal Coaters doesn't sandblast, hence the cheaper price.

I don't this is Metal Coaters, the response I got was "That includes blasting, cleaning, coating, materials and labour." So it looks like $200 is for blasting.

since metal coaters doesn't sand blast would it be worth it to go somewhere else just to get the wheels blasted and go to taj for just the powder coat?

Apparently. When I got mine done it was $200 and $280 with clearcoat. Ask them if that includes clear coat and ask for the price without.

After seeing the poor work of stripping they did on p-o-g-i's rim, and seeing that hit26k also needs his rims re done that were done at Metal Coaters, why do people keep going back?

I think they have gotten mixed reviews. After 1 winter they are still mint. One rim has a rock chip the size of 2 grains of salt. Otherwise there is no major difference from when I got them day 1. Anyway, if the price has gone up that much and the quality is hit or miss then it's a good idea to research other powdercoaters.

It's only two bad reviews. There's a lot of satisfy customers out there I'm sure. I'm one of them. I needed someone to powder coat my winter rims. The price was right and so far the coating held up really well.
It might not be as good quality as Quy coating but for winter rims they are an excellent solution.
I'm sure I can find two bad reviews for most companies that sponsor this forum, yet people keep going to all of them. Lots of reasons why I'm sure.

I am not saying you have to go to Quy to get a quality job. Though he certainly is an option. What I am saying, and have said before, is the process metal coaters uses to strip/chemical dip rims, is not going to stand up long term. Unless you have new'ish rims, in perfect condition, that have never been painted etc before. In order for powder coat to adhere properly, rims need to be sand blasted, or media plasted, or something similar. Think of it like using sand paper to rough up a surface so the paint adheres properly. If you just paint on a smooth surface, the paint will not stick properly.
As for the price, and the warranty, that certainly is something to consider. Though, what if you need the rims refinished two months after they are originally powder coated ? You spend ~$30 to have the tires separated from the rims, then you drive to the shop to have the rims refinished, then you drive there again to pick them up once completed. Then you spend another ~$30-$50 to have the tires re-mounted and balanced again. All in, you have now spent at least an additional ~$100 on top of what you spent originally.
So you can go to Quy, or Stripping technologies, or Kenex coatings, or Metal Coaters. There are pricing and service offerings across the board. I would just urge you to consider, why a job costs $250 at one shop at costs $400-$500 elsewhere ? Sure profit plays a factor, but so does labour, and cost of materials to do a job right.

One last comment - please remember, sponsors help pay to keep this site running. Without sponsors, the site would need more financial support from members. So please try and support our sponsors, or if you think a shop does great work, and members would benefit, encourage them to become a sponsor.

    /End of rant .

I totally agree that if the job only a few months, then it's not a good option. Mine lasted through one winter, but if they fall apart next winter, I'll definitely let the members know and add a 'negative' review. Until then, I'll stay positive.

My summer rims were done at Quy and my winter at Metal Coaters. It 'feels/looks' to me like the Quy final product is a bit better, but only time can really tell.

I was just answering your question...
