Painting Brake Rotor Hats on New Rotors

i was looking to paint a set of new rotor hats black so that they don't get all surface rusty and ugly looking. i know to mask off the entire rotor surface.

what kind of grit sand paper should i be using to prep the rotor hat?
should i use just any kind of rust proof paint or stuff like vht flame proof primer and vht caliper paint?

if anyone scene and good guides online please share

Any flat black paint will work.... My brother paints the whole rotor black ... Doesn't sand anything down just sprays them flat black

prep similar to brake calipers, and paint with caliper/high temp paint.

Well I used a wire brush. Then used brake cleaner to clean it up. Then added some anti-rust primer then 4 coats of high temp black paint.

i guess the wire brush would be good if there was surface rust, but since they are brand new i don't see a wire brush doing much

maybe i'll get some 150 grit just to help scuff the surface a bit

on vht website it was mention curing the paint, it says to bake item in oven at 200 degrees for 20 minutes, do you think that is necessary to do that to the rotors?

i doubt it's neccesary. just do some really hard braking lol

It's lasts for a while... When ever he has the wheels off he just re sprays them

I like to stick to silver paint for the factory look... but black is another good choice... I've seen the other colours and I honestly think they look tacky with rotors that don't have any unique or stylish features

i agree with you on other colours besides black looking tacky, the orginal silver looks fine but thats what i current rotors were and now they are all rusty and nasty looking so i was wanting to paint them black to prevent the hats from getting rusty colour

the factory silver paint isn't strong enough against the elements... if you just simply painted over them with better silver paint, it wouldn't be a problem I painted brand new rotors with silver paint this way and not have any problems with salt spray
now if these rotors were used and have rust on them already, then you'll need to sand them off before prime and painting

you want it even better, you can buy high temp clear coat to protect them even better

oh yeaa.
although Canadian tire doesn't have vht clear coat listed on there website so i will have to go in check if they carry it. now thing is that by the time i get brake cleaner/primer/paint/clear it will cost over $40. i wonder if for around 40 bucks more i can get a slightly better rotor that already comes with black covered hats?

To be honest most will rust over time anyway. My OEM are still good after almost 5 years but I doubt most aftermarkets are like that. I would just prep and spray them with the black and go with it. No clear.

I would try to mask off as much of the rotor as you can so that you don't gum up the pads with paint when you start driving. It won't make a big difference but it could.
