The fastest MS3's around any road course in Ontario has or ran with a stock turbo.
The reason why some MS3's will never blow up is because they went BT....well, and a proper tune.
Those are really the only two things anyone needs to consider when deciding whether to go BT or not. All the other stuff is personal preference.
Hints: HP is not what makes a car fast and big power is not what blows up engines. Digest these...as these are things they don't talk about on MSF.

LoL for once Fobio I agree with you...
The little k04 is very responsive, quick power out of the hole, great on road courses where top speed isn't important. Also nicer for daily driving.
A big turbo will keep you from hair-drying at the top end and spooling too quickly down low where you bend rods and do ventilated block mods.
I'd imagine the fun of a big turbo is a) bragging rights per dyno numbers b) the pull through the higher revs c) smoking tires in 3rd and 4th gear lol d) trolling audi's bmw's merc's and gtr's on the highway.

From what I have researched the GTX28 will do all of the above as well and be able to put down more power...whereas the 30 series there is a bit of a lag...more suitable for wide open roads.

lol this is hilarious.
so whats the best car for your buck?
Used BMW 135i with the N54 motor $16,000
Cobb AP V3 $800
Stage 1 93 octane 390 crank hp / ~360 whp
Add downpipes $300
Stage 2 93 octane 450 crank hp / ~390-400 whp
total $17,100 for a car that is similar in weight to the MS3 with Right Wheel Drive
Versus:
Used MS3 (gen Won) $14,000
Cobb AP V3 $600
ATP GTX2867 bolt-on kit $1600
Exhaust manifold $800
HPFP internals $400 /CPe HPFP $700
TMIC $400 /FMIC $800
Downpipe $500
$18,300 / $19,000 so let's say $18,500
that'll get you about 330 whp @ 20 psi
So now you want to up the boost to 24+ psi
Add some form of crankcase ventilation to avoid blowing out dipsticks
1) SP63 Oil Cap on a genWon requires GenPu valve cover so $80 for the cap plus $300 for the pu valve cover, or
2) DJ PCV plate $150 plus OCC setup $150
that puts you up to $18,800 and will get you about 360-370 whp on pump gas. any higher and you need some form of aux fueling (since we can't get E85 here) as you'll max out Injector Duty Cycle soon. Either 100% Meth ($500) or port injection ($1000)
but now you want to forge the motor to take advantage of the aux fueling
Rods $500
Pistons $700
Gasket kit, friction washers, DCR VVT, main studs, head studs, head gasket and other numerous parts you should change while the motor is apart $1700
Machine shop labour with no head work $2000
So now you're up to $24,700 and 500 whp on a Fail Wheel Drive car....at which point, the car isn't a daily driver any more and you end up getting an N54 as a daily :P

Didnt know the price of the 135i has dropped that much...do those have the same hpfp woes as the 335s?

There were TSBs on the HPFP and injectors on all the N54 motors (135, 335, 535, etc). The used ones most likely had the HPFP and injectors replaced at some point.
same worry can be applied to a used MS3. over 100k on the N54 and the oil filter housing gaskets, thermostat and water pump usually have to be changed in time. If you can find a high mileage one where that's already done, you're golden.

yea i know, to be honest my old boss has a 2010 1351 RWD he has the AP, downpipes, exhaust, FMIC, intakes, his bov's making 390whp and 400wtq. its really quick. but the cost of upgrades compared to the ms3 is huge difference. i was really pushing my car last night for a bit on the 427 and i love my front fail drive lol.
I'm already planning ahead what my next car to build is going to be. can't decide if i want to go the supra/rx7/r34 route, or go the 'merican' route. complete restoration on an old 68 camaro or 70 charger/challenger. would love to do something like this and make it a gift for my dad. :)

some of the post with the cost of mods was in jest but there was also truth behind the numbers and people fail to see that the cost quickly adds up and modding is a slippery slope.
that's why i have both...the MS3 remains for the raw, demonic feeling it provides for when i need to scratch that itch.
in regards to $ for BMW mods, yes there is a BMW tax but if you do your research, there are also cost effective mods, just like the ms3...for example:
N54 FMIC
VSRF $400
Cobb $1000
both do the same thing...
MS3 intercooler
TMIC $400
FMIC $1100
the one mod I did find ridiculous in price was the BPV/BOV pipe.... with a Tial BOV, they're close to $600. that means the pipe alone is $300+... and then there's the Akra exhaust :whoa :chuckle
in any case, there is no "best" anything. it all boils down to personal preference.
however, maybe if I were able to somehow combine the DISI drivetrain with the N54 drivetrain in one chassis, then I could get an AWD MS3-35i ....hmmmmm

Hey Gents,
I'm in the market for some new rubber. I'm looking for summer tires at the stock size, don't really want the 235mm look and would like some feedback from those who've already replaced their Gen 2 Dun-flops!
I've narrowed down to (in order or preference)
- Kumho Ecsta SPT
- Continental ExtremeContact DW
- FEDERAL SS-595
I'd love to get the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, but frankly their pricey and I don't drive as much as I used to nor as hard!!
Any other suggestions I'm all ears!!
Thx,
J

I'm on Toyo Proxes T1's which I got a good price from newmarket tire and I really enjoyed the extra traction + better ride quality with them.
I have heard good things about the Continentals and they would were my choice if I didn't get such a good deal on my Toyo's.
Michelin's are nice but I agree with you, I don't want to spend that kinda money with my current set-up.
Don't know what you mean by the 235 look. You have a pu so any tires look puny...apparently fywdyl has 18's but they look like 16's
S.F.W. is running 245's and they don't look big at all
DLYDRVN
03-05-2014, 10:41 AM
The conti's are a good tire but the wet traction is kind of lacking. The federals have crap wet weather traction and they're generally cheaper.
I like the kumho look and they are supposed to be a great tire. They were on my short list for rubber for my speed when I was looking.
+1 to the toyo proxes t1's. I adored my T1Rs.
You may also want to look at Falken 452s. Have run two sets of them on the rx8 and been very happy all around. A bit noisy but great wet traction.

The 452's, I haven't run on the speed platform, but ran on my old 3, was not a fan. Found they wore quickly, and generally performed below expectations.
The Conti's were on my short list before I bought Hankook V12's .

PSS's are about $1000 out the door and worth every penny. If and when I wear through my current set, another set (or whatever the newest version) will be going on. Given how much we spend on other mods for these cars, spending $1000 on a set of tires doesn't seem so bad given how much they do for the performance of the vehicle.

Yea, good call out on the wear factor on the 452's. I will admit that two seasons of spirited driving in the rx8 was enough. I was otherwise very happy with them, but I haven't run them on the speed either
V12's were on my short list as well.
I should mention I suppose that I'm running BFG g-force KDW-II on my speed right now
Oh, also I've been happy with Yoko s.drives on my 2. Totally different car power-wise but very grippy cornering and good wet traction.
The 452's, I haven't run on the speed platform, but ran on my old 3, was not a fan. Found they wore quickly, and generally performed below expectations.
The Conti's were on my short list before I bought Hankook V12's .

Spoke with Keith at exclusive and convinced me to get the new falken 453's. He's been driving on them and said that they are quieter and bigger improvement over the 452's. He also said he had a client buy some super sports, came back and got the 453's as he didn't like how super sports performed on his car. Said later that he preferred the 453's as the sidewall is stiffer and better for spirited/handling driving. Also the 453's tread pattern is almost the same as the super sports so not uni-directional and can be rotated for longevity; and price is the same as the V12's.

PSS's are absolutely fine in the wet. Better than my old Toyo Proxes on my old 3. Just get the pilot sport A/S's ... they will be a HUGE upgrade for you and will last a bit longer and work a little later in the season. All seasons vs summer's, the biggest difference is their tolerance to cold which trades off some dry/warm weather performance.

They are decently grippy in the dry for an OEM tire. Wear, noise, comfort, wet, etc are all compromised. That said, run em' till they're done before upgrading.

I don't find the PSS's soft...they track very well when cornering fast/hard, are predictable and afford some extra grip when you reach the limits due to their variable contact patch stuff.

I originally had the Yokohomas that came with the 3 and it wasn't that great. On dry they were ok but anything else they were garbage. Now after a long winter I think I'll find all summer tires amazing lol! But very excited to put on the speed3 rims/tires whenever the snow decidees to go away, hopefully won't make the ride too bumpy

Yep the yokohomas are all seasons. I'm going to assume that at the least the OEM tires for the speed3 will be better than tires for the just the regular 3. Regardless, definitely excited to get the wheels on.

Don't know what you mean by the 235 look. You have a pu so any tires look puny...apparently fywdyl has 18's but they look like 16's
S.F.W. is running 245's and they don't look big at all
Well loki, I'd rather have the tire seat comfortably on the rim, that have the sidewall over hang any because I went too wide. But if S.F.W. is riding on the same rubber as last season. I remember his car and you're right, they looked very good. Maybe I can get a 235 then.
I'll check out the Toyo's never had a set, but have only heard good things......
Ok. Federals were a value option.....not really in the running and put out now with the wet traction issue. I didn't even like the wet traction of my Dunlops and I've used those.
The 452's, I haven't run on the speed platform, but ran on my old 3, was not a fan. Found they wore quickly, and generally performed below expectations.
The Conti's were on my short list before I bought Hankook V12's .
I'm not a fan of the Falkens at all. I've had multiple sets and they've underperformed in each case and I had about 60% of the power of the speed and had dialed in suspension on the car I had then. Not even going to consider them again! As far as Hankooks, generally they were good, much better than the Falken's, but I find Kuhmos provide better traction between the two (I've used both on the same car) and the price points are similar.

Yeah, I'd still love to grab the PSS's. But that $1000 out the door is just too much for my driving style now. I don't track and even when I do "spirited driving" it's for short stints or long trips. Either way, not enough to justify almost double the other contenders. I have a few other things to do to the Speed and the $$$ only stretches so far!! LOL
Thanks all for the feedback. I'm down to the Kuhmo's, Conti's and Toyo's, now to figure out which of the three???
oh civics....y u even try?

I just think that the clamps are too convoluted and there's no bracket on the intake like it had on my CP-E intake. Also hated that clamp on the TIP! I don't like how it sits besides the ECU. I might pull it out on the weekend and sell it and go with the usual CP-E.

Corksport vs. Cobb vs. CPe catted downpipe? I've decided to stay away from UR because of a supposed rust issue, but I haven't found a significant answer for the others either here or on msf.
Without taking brand-whoring into consideration, is there a tangible reason to choose one over the other? Is there one that the community prefers over the other? Corksport is significantly cheaper (MSRP plus the GB going on), but apparently only uses a 200 cell catalyst (could fail emissions?).

loki . Just had a look, you opened my eyes for sure. The CS lists at $300, but then the high flow cat add on is $281 making it $581 retail. Then a 10% GB discount you are at $523 .
CP-E from Edge with High Flow cat, $555 retail, I think the MSF discount is 3% , so $538.
Cobb is $695 from Edge.
Thus I think go CP-E .

I think I might have had a massive brain fart or stroke while I was at work... The question I originally posed was basically trying to justify the price premium for the cobb, but I started jotting down the prices between meetings and gave myself what appears to be a healthy discount to the Corksport price. My apologies. I guess I'm getting a CPe + the Tax1 code on MSF for 5% off.

From what i can see from the images, the CS catless down pipe doesn't have the race pipe, but the catted version has a flex section and is one piece like the Cobb and CPE units. Seems odd to manufacture two units, and kind of a pain in the arse for anyone who already has a race pipe.
I'll probably go COBB when i do mine, but that's as much because i had a pretty fantastic customer service experience with them as anything else.

Hmmm... I thought they both came with high flow cat and racepipes, but with my untrained eye, I can't tell looking at the pictures... Looks like the CP-e put the (potential) racepipe before the cat, whereas the Cobb has it after. Also, it looks like the CP-e is the only one of the two that has a lifetime warranty.

CP-e's "Lifetime" warranty is not really lifetime or worth really anything as they won't cover f*ck all. Their usual reaction is to tell you to get lost or buy the new version at half price because they don't support the old one anymore.

I was told that UR had rust issues and that they would be using an inferior cat (200 cell vs 400). UR was the front runner because of no shipping, but those things kind of scared me off. Should I be looking into a resonated version? Didn't think the dp increased the sound levels
The noise level "usually" increase with aftermarket DP.... at least it happened to my cpe catted dp. From listening to my fellow ms3 with UR pipes.. they don't belong to the quiet side... at all.
Reducing restriction alone will increase sound levels. Plus the increased piping size will increase sound levels

Jeez I sound like a tard these days. I blame excessive work hours. Anyway, what I neglected to include was the word "significantly" before "louder"

Should read the mod path. Also, our stuff is called a bypass valve. There's a way to be able to safely use a blow off valve but that invloves a lot more detail that you'll have to read up on.
This topic has been covered a million times (ok, maybe not a million times but a thousand times at least in different specks of the interwebs).
Other than that, happy safe modding. :)

Learn what types of blow off valves are available. Learn about the bypass valve on our cars. Many companies like cobb and corksport make replacements that sound great and won't harm your car. Yes you need a tune to go vta.

Nothing wrong with a TMIC on a GTX2867.
Also, nothing wrong with a GTX2867 on a stock engine. A forged engine can be more hassle than its worth in terms of cost and time... Even with a second car. However, if the reason for forged engine is bad compression then that's another story.

I wanted to replace the rods and pistons before my small block gets a random whole in it and is a complete rebuild.
And I would go bigger but there is no point of going to a massive BT because I don't want to install 5th port fueling. I am leaning towards the GTX 2867 or 3067 just not sure yet. The BNR would also save me from getting a new intake and Brian has revamped the BNR to have a bigger WG for better boost control.
The engine ain't broke yet but I like having a game plan. We'll see how far the game plan actually goes though... considering I could sell my car and just get a AWD/RWD platform to have more fun (traction) with.
I may go BT before forged judged by what you guys are saying.

WITH Head work $4700
NO Head work $3400
TOTAL PARTS AND MACHINE SHOP LABOUR
WITH head work $8800
NO Head work $7500
removing the clutch saves you $1000.
Then there's labour cost if you plan to have shop pull and install the motor so budget $10,000
Edge has put together these parts that you would need in an engine rebuild (almost all of the stuff i listed above):
http://www.edgeautosport.com/stage-3-mzr-motor-build-kit-ms3-ms6-2006-2013/ $1215.92 up to $1700
Cheapest thing to do is to replace the rods and pistons and open the piston ring gap... approx. $1000 + the motor build kit $1700 + labour
so anywhere from $3000 (DIY) or ~$4000 (shop assemble motor) + removal and installation of motor (either DIY or shop)
again, budget $10,000 for rainy day fund because shit will go wrong
bottom line, shit ain't cheap

I forgot to add the cost of a 2nd motor if the plan is to build while still driving around with the stock motor...
So add anywhere from $1500 to $2500 for a used motor. Some of that cost you may be able to recoup by selling the stock motor... Or keep the stock motor as a backup for a worse case scenario.
You don't plan on spending over $10,000...It happens if something goes wrong and you've already sunk money into it that you just want to see it completed.
Cheaper to just buy a used bmw 335i and make more power anyway

I would just be paying for a machine shop to disassemble and reassemble. All the other stuff I can handle on my own, I would just want the machine shop to get everything within spec.
We'll see about doing this come September because I get my truck and car payments are done. If $10000 is gonna be my worst case scenario I can swing that for a project car, but I might change my mind on the platform if that's the case lol. Maybe go with something lighter and rwd (Miata).

We had some problems last year with fenders chipping. Even though we warn customers ahead of time, they regret it so much that they make a huge fuss, and I hate alienating customers.
for the $35/fender that we were charging, it was not worth the immense headaches. This is the reason we stopped doing it. I've even asked my guys to tell customers we no longer do it.
If you dont care about the cosmetic blemishes, I will do it for you. But email me only.
