    Default Metal Coaters (Powdercoating Rims)

So I just got my rims powdercoated today in a Gunmetal matte finish type by Metal Coaters. The reason I went to get mine powder coated was curb rash on one of them, otherwise, I would have stuck wtih the stock silver look on my OZ rims. Now Phillie86 did the first job and thought I'd bite and go try this guy out. (Here is his thread on his Glossy Black MS6 rims: http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/sh...&highlight=ms6). As for my rims:

Also got him to do my pedals.

I was skeptical about when Taj showed me the sample but he assured me this was the best gunmetal he had (he has gloddy types too if matte is not your type). I can't wait until the spring time to put these on! I thanked him and paid $200 Dollars to get them done and he also threw in the pedals as an incentive. Please note he requires a minimum order of $125 for anything so if its a specific item, please call and ask/inquire. Regardless after payment, it was a trip straight to Simply Tire and Lou managed to find this:

I perhaps believe it is my fault as it might have chipped during transporation as I have a hatch and the plastic trunk cover must have braised it from the metal parts while driving on the highway. I will talk to Taj about perhaps recoating it next year since it can't be touched up now but he suggested I go to crappy tire and get "gunmetal" touch up paint to fix it (anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this / get the so called touch up paint?) Regardless, here are them mounted on my wheels:

I can't wait until the spring time to put these on!! For his workmanship, I will have to see come spring time but you can't pass up a better deal than this (No offense to Quy of course). Just as Phillie said, I would bring your rims to him if you are looking at a budget / want something different. Let me know if you have any questions!

Nice job, but those pictures do no justice! That gunmetal looks a bit weird or awkward. Im sure it looks a lot better in person than in these pics.

I'd take an extra coat of powder coating over clear coat paint any day. Clear coat paint is not as thick or durable as a coat of powder paint. If your so uptight about your clear coat, I guess you can justify $250.00 more for it? ahahahaha you got to be kidding me. Get a rattle can and clear them yourself.

Regardless, it will chip as nothing lasts forever. Especially wheels. Even with clear coat, if you smacked it hard enough you'd crack the clear and see it flake off. You need to be gentle with them. When I loaded them on my truck I made sure each wheel was wrapped individually and padded with bubble wrap.

i guess you never saw what powder clear looks like
i have a set of race rims with powder clear that take a hard beating all the time and the rims are still mint
only some hardcore brake dust baked on them

Ive seen and I agree its a great addition, but for the price, if it doesnt come with clear you really cant complain. The fact he added 2x the powdercoat, it has doubled the durablity just as Quy's 1x paint and 1x clear.

Now my hi gloss black powdercoat paint had a high level of clear for the reflection in it. He did not need to add another clear coat to it. For these rims, I'd say they look like they would look better with the gloss.

BTW, I had one of Quy's wheels (the orange MS6) and I had it at one of the meets. We put it on the floor next to Dan's car and not really being careful or caring if it touched the pavement, I noticed the paint chipped and bare metal exposed. Regardless of the clear coat.

there is never a reason for 2 coats of powder
unless its a 2 stage color like mine where florescent yellow (base coat is white)
if you ever see powder clear you will know that its not just any clear
    yes the price is more
and this is why i say (you get what you pay for)

Does he have a hoist to take the rims off the car as well as a machine for the tires, or do you have to bring in the rims already off the car and without tires?

No, just like Quy's, you are on your own in terms of mounting and dismounting. I got mine done at Simply Tire

I have tried to view this thread from afar, but I need to point out that there really is no need to reference Quy in this thread...esp since this is a review of Metal Coaters...but since you feel the need to continually bring Quy up, I think it is only fair that Quy is represented.

First, the references to price is ridiculous. Yes, it is good to have options and I am all for that. However, any insinuation that what you pay for with Metal Coaters is EXACTLY what you get with Quy is absurd. Clear coat is an extra layer of protection...take for example, your car. Would you rather have two-layers of paint instead of paint + clear coat? If the previous is the better way, why the heck does each and everyone of our cars have clearcoat? Having to be gentle with your rims after powdercoating is also ridiculous...they are wheels, on your car, on the road...if they can't handle being transported...well, good luck over the winter...

You get what you paid for is right.

Second, the question was asked about mounting and dismounting with Metal Coaters, not Quy's, so I don't see why Quy was referenced. In fact, I personally contacted Allen@Simply earlier this year to make arrnagements for all members in the future to make it easier for them to mount and dismount for the sake of refinishing. I find it is important to point out that there are no powder coaters I know of that mount and dismount tires...all powder coaters do is powder coating and refinishing...they do not specifically cater to wheels refinishing.

Going forward, I ask that this review stick to its purpose of providing a review of Metal Coaters' service. If anyone is interested in the difference, they can certainly wander over to Quy's PAYING SPONSOR section, that supports the site and the community. Furthermore, look for a video to come from Quy shortly...titled, "Doing it right the first time".

I didn't mean to refernce Quy in any bad manner or comparison. Lets stay on topic. Regardless, the previous poster asked if they dismount and finish at the same time and I only mentioned that Quy does not as well if the original posted intended to check him out and you have to go get it done yourself. Bleh.. I didn't expect alot of rukus here as I just wanted to tell people of some other options =p

I agree lets leave Quy out of this. Im not here to bash his service as I like him as a person and how he conducts his business. His work is top notch, no doubt.

I am in a financial position where I cant justify 450 and 200 was a better route for me considering rims will eventually chip - clear coat or not just like it would on a vehicles paint.

If Metal Coaters could do clear (which I already told him to add) I would have paid the extra 50 dollars.

Lets not let this get nasty, cool?

So just to keep everyone in the loop, I settled for a set of winter rims (from NextMod). The rim color was quite nice (darkish chrome), but it wasn't what I wanted. So...powdercoating here I come! Even with the lack of TM3 reviews in respect to Metal Coaters, I decided to go to them to test out their service and product. Why? I was captured by their pricing. From the posts above, I too believe in 'paying for what I get.' I just hope that what I will pay won't be that bad :p

Brought in my wheels last thursday (November 4), and they confirmed with me yesterday that they'll order the powder today. The reason for the delay is because they did not have the color I wanted in stock. Up to this point, communication with Taj was difficult. I requested an email of the color they were planning to order. That email did not come until yesterday. Even so, the color I wanted was not available But it's ok... I need to keep reminding myself that these are winter rims :p

With all said and done, the rims should be done mid next week. What will be done is: sandblast, primer, color, and clear coat. The quote so far is under $400.

400!?!?!?!? why is he charging you so much? At that price, you might as well go to Quy for $50 more. I payed $200 for a simple gloss black. Once he gets the color in though, turn around should be 3 days. At least it was for me. Hope all goes well with this Gabe. Post pics when you get the rims back.

Here's the cost break down: it's $200 bucks if he has the color in stock. He didn't have mine so he had to order them. ordering costs $120. furthermore, because this'll be my winter rims, I wanted the clear coat on too (i think it was $40 a rim). I talked to Quy and this was the cheaper route.

To be honest, I'm quite scared regarding the result of this. We'll just have to see next week.

i hear ya. im a little skeptical on how well my winters will hold up too. If they look like crap after this winter, im going to have them redone by Quy.

i'm assuming this (so don't quote me on it) but i think it's best to have them also clear coat your rims. once that paint chips, it's done. for my wheels, knock on wood, if the paint messes up after this winter season...i'm gonna go bug them for another job. there's no way I'm letting a $400 job last me 4 months only.
