This is not about you but the first thing I thought of when I saw this photo...

Usually if there are other children around (beaches/pools to even kid's sporting events like soccer), I'm careful where I point my camera. If I want to take photos of my nieces, I get up close so that there's no mistake who I'm taking photos of.
It's not uncommon for some parents to get paranoid about ppl with cameras around their children and some venues (ie. public hockey arenas) don't allow photography due to privacy concerns. It's just the type of situation I'd rather avoid.

optiklenz13
03-29-2011, 08:27 AM
Agreed! This was the one and only shot I've taken of the landscape, nothing else. I had to go keep my camera after this shot, I've only taken like 10 pictures in the waterpark and I had to ensure I was pointing at nothing else but my kids/family. I had my 70-200mm lens so there was no mistake that I'm pointing at other people. I think I was getting the looks because of the lens I was packing. LOL!! Even the lifeguard was like whoa?!! :D

NO, more like what's that wrapped in a towel?!

I had it wrapped as I don't want it to have water splashed all over it, just in case. LOL!! It was really odd looking especially if you carry it in front of you. :P

I guess it didn't like my link...

Let's try this...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/randallbeatty/5712504189/

You're still linking the page, not the image in the image tag.

Here's how I did it. Right click on the image on that page, pick a size to view it (I used Medium 640). When that new page loads, right click on that image and choose "Copy Image Location" or whatever your browser's version of that is. It should end in JPG or something similar (to test, open new tab/window and paste that link in there. Should only be an image.). Post THAT link in the image tag and the image will show.

Please note, it's NOT a good idea to post REALLY large photos. Medium 640 is a nice size.

EDIT: As I already added the photo, you might not need to but if you want to do exactly as I did in the above post when fixing it for you, you can copy the link you WERE posting but do it as a URL...then take the image link and do the image inside the URL /URL tags...it basically will show the image and when you click the image, go to the site that image is on...If you need more help, just send a PM and I'll be happy to explain more if needed...

A bit rich, for a 'safe' track tune - but not overly rich. It only backfired on occasion to my knowledge.

Finally picked up a tripod over the weekend to try out some night shots, and since it was a full moon last night.

Playing with my filters as well, this is my blue filter (I need to actually look up what they do, but what I gathered about this one is it makes halogen lights/colors appear more white...) I am still a noob to photography.

I have finally started shooting full manual, auto can kiss my butt now haha.

From my balcony.

I just wanted to ask since there are a ton of photographers here,

How many of you touch your pictures up after you shoot them, either with Lightroom, Photoshop ....

My impression of taking a picture was to capture "that" moment, not to take it and modify it. I was always taught by my dad to shoot the picture the way you want it to end up, no post processing, keep it original.

I see some pic's that I am sure are edited in one way or another.

If you had to enter a contest using a picture that is not processed would you enter? Do you feel like you are at a disadvantage when not using an image app?

I have used Lightroom a little bit, mainly just for browsing my pictures, but I feel I am cheating when I use it to actually make changes. I feel like that is no longer "my" picture.

I don't want to start a flame war, but want opinions.

IMO, one should always do their best to capture an image properly on camera, whether film or digital. It's not good to have the mindset of "shoot now and I'll fix in post." This just ends up being A LOT of post work and the image probably still won't be as good as if taken properly from the start.

But with that said, there's nothing wrong with post processing (again whether film or digital) to IMPROVE an image (rather than fix) and it's a GREAT asset to have. It's widely accepted that post processing is part of the photography work flow. I see nothing wrong with correcting white balance, colour, and sharpening - in fact this is the basics and should be done on every photo.

The only place extensive post processing (like cloning) does not belong is in news reporting.

Thanks folks, I appreciate your responses.

When correcting color/contrast, what if the individual is making the sky appear more blue than it really is, or the grass more green, adding contrast is good, but now you did not take that "picture", you took a picture of a scenery, and then modified it to what you feel it "should" look like.

Just my 2 cents.

Of course you still took that picture. If not you then who did?

That's called editing/post processing.

I process all my images through Lightroom. Most get only contrast/cropping/white balance adjustments, and then some get further toning done (sepia, some creative desaturation, occasionally other mild effects). I've tried to maintain a clean but modern style for the photos I produce for my clients, which is what I consider my style.

Having said all that, I can definitely appreciate good creative processing - which usually requires a great to exceptional shot out of the camera anyways. Photoshop/Lightroom/whatever is useless if you're starting with crap.

Lastly, with the proliferation of digital photo software, don't forget that for almost as long as film has been used, developers have pushed tones and colours around in the darkroom. Now it is up to the photographer to do this themselves - the software is your darkroom. So don't be afraid to experiment with it. Its a further way of differentiating and defining your style.

PS - about colour correction etc mentioned above: The camera doesn't always get things right. Besides always adjusting white balance to match what the actual scene looked like, one of the most common things I adjust is the colour of grass. My camera doesn't seem to get the greens right IMO, they are too yellow, so I make that adjustment to match what is actually there. That's not altering reality, that's tweaking your equipment to accurately portray reality.

Wow the photograph from you 3-owners on this forum is awesome. lol... I'm talking with some people right now about possibly collaborating with a new racing and automotive culture website/e-zine which looks like a very promising concept. How many of you have developed a paying gig from what was once a hobby? How do you like the change? How does it change your photos? I'm a little hesitant to move forward because things have picked up for me so quickly since I only started this stuff a little over a year ago as a careless hobby.

And also, for my editing; I use Lightroom to edit the whitebalance, contrast and hue/saturation depending on the photo, sometimes sharpness and other little changes. Then I switch to PS to use selective colour to alter the white if there is a lot of white in the photo, if not then i just skip to the last step which is resizing as a vectored image (smart object in PS) and I put in the watermark which is kinda cheesy lol.
I wouldn't use post-processing as much if I had a nice new camera but I'm shooting with a 2006 Pentax K10D. The older sensor and firmware means I get way more colour fading and noise on my RAW images, even on low ISO settings, than I see when shooting from newer cameras that I borrow from friends or wherever. It's to the point where if I didn't post-process the photos would look more unnatural.

I don't want to start a flame war, but want opinions.

I'll pitch in my two cents here...

My feeling has always been that the purpose of photography is to capture the look and/or feel of a moment in time as experienced by the photographer.

If the photographer takes the picture then remembers being struck by how vivid the contrast between the green of the grass and the blue of the sky was, and it isn't reflected in the resulting photo, then by all means they should do whatever they feel is necessary so that the picture represents their impressions at the time it was taken.

The unmodified output of a camera is by no means an "absolute truth".... Why would the colours/lighting/contrast etc. as recorded by a chemical reaction on a little strip of plastic be more "truthful" than the photographer's memory of the scene? Why is a grid of colours as accepted by an electronic sensor and interpolated by a computer be more "human" than the photographer's emotions?

I suppose this is to say, I feel that when it comes to post-processing, the ends justify the means. That said, when it's presented as a "photograph" and not as "art" I do think that honesty in terms of limiting the changes to match the photographer's memory is kind of important. If it's being presented as "art" though, then it's open season.

I do agree with Xerox's comments as well though; all photographers should strive to achieve the desired outcome on site, which gives free time to take more pictures, which would otherwise be spent at the computer "fixing" the original shots (something I am guilty of as I continue to familiarize myself with my dSLR).

My HDRS never turn out like your shots.

Im using photomatix and no matter what I do to the setting I cant seem to get it right. Think you could do a how to typed out set by step from the photo to the post processing.

most recent HDR: http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr311/X--FU51ON--X/Genesis%20Shots/HDRRob1.jpg

I know there are a lot of excellent photographers on this forum. I am just starting into it, and figured this would be a place where everyone can show off and critique each other's work.

I've just started trying to do HDR photos and here are some I've done.

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=184761&id=511112313&l=95f8dfa69c

I still haven't perfected adjusting all the settings yet. I'm using Photomatix Pro on my laptop. Eventually I will do post processing of these images in Photoshop.

Shooting 3 shots. with the exposure adjustment. I think Im doing something wrong. I tested it first on a diecast car, my very first HDR and it came out soft and pencil crayon like. the way its suppose too. And since then I havent gotten it right. Back to inside shooting and testing to see what Im doing wrong. lol.

Thx Steve.

When I was learning HDR I read this tutorial: http://www.stuckincustoms.com/hdr-tutorial/

It's good because on the 2nd page it explains what each setting does. Hope that helps.

I will just warn you guys now, be careful with HDR. I find a lot of people use it to draw the attention away from their poor compositions or technical skills. It looks ok when done right, but a lot use it as a crutch.

Anyways this really I got really into shooting autoracing. Its been a lot of fun and I have been learning a lot while improving.

I've got a lot more of my UE type photography online at my site - www.tohellandback.net check it out if you're interested. One of these days I'll get around to making similar places for my macro / wildlife / wedding / industrial / all other types of pictures.

that's my exact words of what I feel about her photos. They tell a story. When she comes home from a shoot and puts a little blog together I almost feel like I'm there.

she's only picked it up recently within the last year, and who knows where it'll take her but the future is looking bright for her! All I know is her gear costs almost as much as my speed.....oh well.

I'm not old, be 30 really soon but I did get married at 25. But I also look like I'm 22...but people will kill for those genes and that's what ID is for.

I'll pass your comments along. she'll be glad to hear it.

Really nice work. Funny, how I found this blog about a month ago about exploring the sewers / abandon buildings / TTC tunnels. Photo's are REALLY interesting. You should check out Detroit for some really GREAT, run-down iconic buildings.. I always thought of going there to do some photojournalism... but I wondered if I parked my car... would it be still there 20min later or would I be mugged.

Next purchase very shortly will be 35mm Prime F1.4. Her gear is quickly approaching the cost of my speed3. Which lens would complete this "holy trinity"?

If you're interested in the 24-70mm I say do it. It's an amazing lens, incredibly sharp and quick. But it all depends on what you're shooting mainly. She does lifestyle photography so she doesn't need those crazy zoom lenses. What are you planning on shooting with the 300mm? Haven't checked that out but I'm guessing price is well over 5 grand.

IMO to round off the kit you'd want a 14-24 f2.8, 85 f1.4, 50 f1.4 and 35 f1.4
14-24 is such a godlike lens...nothings better for wide photography on a full frame camera. Shame my D200 and its silly crop sensor cant enjoy it to the fullest :\

oh, and to those wondering how I get access to the places I photograph. A few of the construction cranes / industrial plants have been legit access, but most of the stuff I just walked right into. storm drains, sewers, abandoned hotels, factories, hospitals, schools, power plants and all sorts of other goodies are all around. Sure it can be dangerous, and you have to be careful, but research, planning, common sense and a bit of luck can help to mitigate those risks. Its amazing how much exists around us that so many people never stop to notice.

she looked into the 14-24mm, but in the end didn't seem interested in it. She rented it for a few weddings and didn't even really use it.

like I said, she's interested in the 35mm F1.4.

Got the 50mm F1.8D shortly after buying the D80 because well it's cheap and good bang for the buck. But she doesn't use it. As for the 85mm, the 70-200mm does a great job. Yeh it's a F2.8 but the ISO on the D700 is insane if you're really struggling with the light, and plus really knowing how to use your flash comes in handy.

sometimes switching lenses is just part of getting the shot you want, no matter how much of a pain it is.

And if you really want to get into the low light lenses, you won't find zoom lenses that come in F1.4. there's always a trade-off

Thanks bud......thanks to the selective color of the 5100. :)

Awesome pictures everyone!!

@optik: Nice shots man.. TO skyline photo is the best and very unique!

@timotee: Nicely done sir! The brightness of the sun is still visible even with edit.

@loki: What kind of lens does your wife use? Those are really really crisp pictures.

@terapr0: Where abouts did you take these pictures?

@dave: That's a nice picture man. It's very rare to see that sunset nowadays.

I only own two zooms, 20-35 f/2.8 and 70-210 f/2.8. Changing lenses is a bit of a pain, but I can't get the narrow depth-of-field or low-light capabilities any other way.

Plus now starting to work with video, the depth-of-field issues become even more important :)

Great shots and I totally agree with the amazing things that are around us that we overlook. Word of caution though, for those deciding on entering construction/abandoned/industrial sites, and I'm sure this goes without being said, but be mindful of the legality of doing so.

I love your sewer shots (that's the engineering geek in me), hope you have yourself a good respirator as there are fumes down there that you definitely don't want to be inhaling. Here's another site which reminds me of your work www.vanishingpoint.ca (http://www.vanishingpoint.ca) if you're interested.

Holy Trinity:
14-24mm F2.8
24-70mm F2.8
70-20mm F2.8

I own the 70-200mm but I will be picking up another of the trinity next year. I have had them all on my camera at one time or another... all excellent. Outside of the tinity I would add the 300 2.8 to the list, wicked fast and super sharp.

lol I cant stand watermarks, especially when you cant even read what they say.
They dont stop people from stealing your photos, and they're just annoying, especially in a large set with many images. If you're that worried about people taking your photos, dont publish them online because theres nothing you can do to stop it. take comfort in the fact that most "stolen" photos wind up in school projects and stupid presentations anyway. As long as nobody takes credit for my work or uses it commercially, I'm flattered if they borrow an image. Its always nice to have them ask permission, but Im not losing sleep if they dont. If you're truly concerned, then only publish low-res images that cant be used for commercial applications to begin with.
most real professionals dont use watermarks anyways

I like using a watermark on things I post on public forums, not because I'm worried about the photos getting used elsewhere ("stolen") but that I'd like my name/business to be associated with those images if they are posted elsewhere. Sure someone might go to the trouble of removing the watermark, but that is less likely. At least when that photo shows up somewhere people know where it came from.

I started doing that more regularly last year when I did a Ford Focus photoshop and it immediately was re-hosted by someone on another forum. Then there was no way for anyone to see who did it or the others in the series. I guess in some ways it is a pride issue lol.
