Use needle nose pliers. That's how I did it.

GT-2 was the first one I played. I remember it was a challenge winning races in the Gran Turismo or "simulator" mode not sure what they called it. And yeah the races I find were more challenging. Not so much customization as GT5. Havent played GT6 though
